RE:  DHS seeks public input on budget priorities, reductions

(Please share the information below with others who may be interested in
providing input to DHS.)

The Oregon Department of Human Services will hold public meetings in Portland,
Salem, Medford, Bend and Newport in late July and early August to receive
input on budget recommendations the department will make to the Governor*s
Office.

The department is seeking feedback on the proposed agency budget for the
2005-07 biennium. Proposals to be considered include options to improve
programs, protect vulnerable populations, deliver more community-based
services, and strengthen accountability. Agency recommendations are due Sept.
1 to the Governor, who in turn will propose a 2005-07 state budget to the
Oregon Legislature.

The department will also share information on possible budget reductions,
which it is required to provide for consideration to the Governor and
Legislators per state statute. The department will consider public input
received from these meetings in developing this initial budget request. The
meetings are scheduled for:

Medford: 10 a.m. * noon, Tues., July 27 * Smullin Health and Education Center,
2825 E. Barnett Rd., adjacent to Rogue Valley Medical Center.
Bend: 1:30 p.m. * 3:30 p.m., Thurs., July 29 * DHS building, Lewis & Clark
Conference Room, 1300 NW Wall St.
Salem:  1:30 p.m. * 3:30 p.m., Fri., July 30 * Cascade Hall, McKenzie Room,
Oregon State Fairgrounds.
Portland:  2 p.m. *  4 p.m., Mon., Aug. 2 * Oregon Association of Minority
Entrepreneurs, 4134 N. Vancouver Ave.
Newport:  10 a.m. *  noon, Tues., Aug. 3 * DHS Child-Welfare building,
Conference Rooms A & B, 119 NE 4th St.

Department leaders will devote the first half of the two-hour meetings to
outlining the proposals. Participants will spend the second hour in small
groups offering their input. The full list of budget proposals will be
available July 20 at: http://www.dhs.state.or.us/aboutdhs/budget. Input prior
