Dear Erin,
We are learning more about the impact of trauma and abuse on the brain. Current research and practice is shaping the development of new ways to more effectively work with survivors of violence- whether we work with them for a few hours or a few years. In this workshop, we will explore the brain's basic structure and development, focusing particularly on how that is impacted by abuse at various stages of life. Our explorations will include the relationship between overt abuse and attachment losses, the process and meaning of dissociation, the power of implicit memories to shape present behavior, and pathways to healing. As we develop clarity about the impact on the brain and mind of abuse, we may well develop greater compassion for all those with whom we work. At the end of the day, we will also talk about how to support this new learning so it can become a solid basis for practice.
Participants will be able to:
* Describe the basic structure and function of the brain, particularly those circuits that are impacted by abuse and involved in therapy and/or other interventions.
* Understand the neurobiology of attachment losses and overt abuse, and be able to identify the behavioral results.
* Understand the process of dissociation, and be able to identify these states in survivors of abuse.
* Increase clarity with which survivors of all ages are seen as a result of being able to picture their brains and minds.

She is an instructor at Portland State University, board member of the Global Association for Interpersonal Neurobiology Studies, has an active practice in Vancouver [WA], and presents nationally and internationally. Bonnie has a gift for translating neuroscience into practical principles, which can be employed directly with traumatized clients.
