Medicare won't issue new IDs to identity-theft victims<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001RNclYXsE17Am8ALTVnJEIvydD4-UDgXCbbecF9BRUtZpoQBeYrS6ElMVeUHU3BgApg72xXoQjGErA8-F74msvdrpdh8KsXHcNR_6l3zezTrBMbLe_Sf2DdtVv1hvQNLreIYqqTNyQGZgh_ntChwjJHZrwLSbF08Cy3r10hWxhQyZ2idCy9-W9lbDuaW6RnYnQ3QYEuh_ohOUK2pU4xYJaN76n4HJ75oqJpEtxMFVCAuZNHsrILzEtA==>

Medicare officials say it's too expensive and too many agencies are involved to reissue ID numbers to the 284,000 beneficiaries potentially victimized by identity theft. This may slow down access to care and pose difficulties for the beneficiaries in accessing services, which may compound the experience of victimization.

Verizon policies to aid domestic violence victims<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001RNclYXsE17AxCinKklQ3L_FCkuJq9Q2Af2N9O_K_gXtDOJfez8vsLI5tQyYhRukwixglmQ2PTNa_gaIxTSDD5XuvQTj9v4XJycXpcKiDxbMTByLBlPS-ApXCD6VyAL4OUuo5zw8w3Mlq4_VWaHTcO1Tlr9lpyx2VI12A6Be-Qxs=>

The sister of a domestic violence victim recently launched a successful campaign to encourage Verizon to re-evaluate how their policies affect domestic violence victims. The woman's sister survived domestic violence but subsequently struggled to pay the $500 cancellation fee for terminating her joint mobile contract she shared with her abuser. In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Verizon has announced the implementation of new policies to allow for early contract termination for victims and promote staff training on working with victims.

Connecticut - Guilty verdict tossed in sex assault of woman with cerebral palsy<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001RNclYXsE17DxfCbSTDcYlld6E2btHR4L9-iE88aoUYyqCD9N2BAFWZmc4xyrKlwHfcveZ225h1X9SRmR4tUlrn4Nup0udmJfvPguKZg8qeTzBOi7Y_QHx9UaDdhgt_pWXEUDmlycLqEs2dEL4efkrEPIb1ZMqtK1RCsJyOUDPNb4TnYlWgOT8uJrQxKjOcwANrQZ6UGIHncUwOE7H-TbDcPkeSn5AFMvA21KWm5ha-JB3Wrio45mCA==>

Connecticut's Supreme Court overturned the conviction of a man found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman with severe cerebral palsy who can only communicate by moving her right index finger. The justices ultimately ruled they were not convinced the woman was "so uncommunicative that she was physically incapable" of denying consent. Advocates have voiced concern about the ruling. "Our justice system should provide them with protection, not require them to resist their attackers," said James McGaughey, the executive director of the Office of Protection and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities.

New York - Torah fraud earns Rabbi prison term<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001RNclYXsE17DysMQfe4hrjNm6adyknSTD-53s93aE174AcDv0xflnQAs44I8Ecb70LwCe69iuaThl_Q0elaY4O7HDkv1Sza99CAGD1pxPkvQaxvV_7TjLfJD9sCT8V1MYANFMYFeRlNxku34B5EIOtlNEtdNcaKaUB8kSOgO7hw39rCASjdD8i7JqwQVtbGC4LtAywtwY3NQhKNJ6-eAG3aTO7uqgU5ibz4lorbVf5PU=>

A Manhattan Rabbi has been sentenced to four years in prison after selling Torahs through a charity while fraudulently claiming they had been rescued after being hidden or lost during the Holocaust. Several victims delivered impact statements by letter and in court. One had paid $14,000 for a Torah and donated it to his synagogue in memory of his deceased father. He said later that the Rabbi had told him falsely that the Torah was found in a mass grave in the town where his father was born in Southern Ukraine. The judge ordered that the defendant pay nearly $1 million in restitution.

Pennsylvania - Juvenile Killers and Life Terms: a Case in Point<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001RNclYXsE17BZk6HUK0wXl1qiXC0jGILPjbQ3D-FqivvyOFR4GCx9T1qHdC-TuwW2U90xJAFaZJTDs2dgUP2cCAPByhVjmHOZVXhwJfCxZIeE486RqQruAanK5_Ui15Sx33DyvFIiO-VAtuf_U1KtFG06eDh4f-HD9pQEYkvoETKc3qw9uwisDtibPj8dWgRk20trgeldl7Qb2Nm7s57DbHmu_DRN8WYNk_kj_8se2j4es4hbt81FWcF6wtG_biQj>

The Supreme Court in June banned mandatory life sentences without parole for those under age 18 convicted of murder, suggesting the possibility of release to more than 2,000 incarcerated juvenile offenders. The ruling did not specify whether it applied retroactively to those in prisons or to future juvenile felons. "There are thousands of family members who can't deal with it at all," said Bobbi Jamriska of the National Organization for the Victims of Juvenile Lifers who is also the sister of a victim murdered by a juvenile. "[Families] thought this was behind them and now discover that they may have to relive the horrors again, return to the court again. Whatever sense of closure they had is gone."

The U.S. attorney's office in Cedar Rapids has set up a telephone line and a page to its website to provide updates and other information for victims in the case against an Iowa investment broker who pleaded guilty last month to misspending investor funds over a 20-year-old period at his Cedar Falls-based brokerage. Under the Crime Victims Rights Act, victims of federal crime are entitled to notification of certain court proceedings.

Alabama - Defiant Mobile County minister gets 10 years for sexual assault, blames rape shield law<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001RNclYXsE17DEF1HpYqqg0M5D37MzY6b6ETV1S1KJVbrWKDPK6fGCQFvNmNSoloeLBDWZBpBadXF-E-yojHRBMufxRMtVhZmZngRg5PCXPGLdf3m4VpkubhG-JBgtj5q2Ynf0bOphdqIlhaYooveOHlVvS0HK22aaLUFCsUoQbOmCp-r-2QfCcQ==>

An Alabama court has reiterated the importance of the state's rape shield law in protecting the privacy of a young victim. The victim was 15 when he was raped by a local pastor. The defendant commented that Alabama's rape shield law compromised his defense. "That [rape shield] statute is a very important statute for these crimes to be prosecuted," stated the judge.

California - Victim advocates decry Mirkarimi outcome<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001RNclYXsE17CwZz8Gv3DRGjroMuo5DG2TFwCGIbij16_bAS8Z0I1gxtjYguul_-hn_JNy9G33WY701HldDmXT9_zTHseRG33_0hHe5nGVx4Fdt7g4JBiZQe9Gd6MLht7JP9kLZuk5Si-LoEd_G33oE4TQm6RZ7T-9nsBpuwPzALD7klOCZprScNg_PQ96sUGM8ERe3qfQaD2nCuPEST-SS7-gooinGBQz>

A San Francisco sheriff has been reinstated after a 10-month suspension following his arrest for domestic violence. The sheriff is on a three year probation and enrolled in a domestic violence program, while also overseeing those same batterers' programs and maintaining the jails in which domestic violence suspects are held.
Victim advocates challenge this decision noting that it sends a confusing message to victims.

Colorado - How should judge protect privacy of Colorado shooting victims?<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001RNclYXsE17CcLKlFrDEq-6DzT3i0KZTMqPjj7VSwfj8be4azcqUI7NiT2xJOUqVj9HwunAejTaWQjVjXsByIG6xSIUi8ejskSoSDjIwOTj-A2Mvvv5AAG4chiiAlXN6jE6CgE_MuwbWaZ95ubhT5vL23u6uD3EQVzEe8Wqa2S47XZCaPJVZUI3XV3axjRo9tjCG283FRKZ8rm_GejSgUtxvX3nBQN_LgrJY4GDqyXMM=>

News media sources have pushed for the release of the identities of several victims of July's Aurora theater shooting. Ms. Teesch-Maguire argued that victims' names need to be protected to prevent further harm, as several victims, their families, and potential witnesses have been harassed by the media and feel intimidated by a group of the defendant's followers.

Oregon - Bend rape victim's computer hard drive must be preserved, judge rules<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001RNclYXsE17CrF2JB0IREI7p2UrPnuZxBoxawj_SmglK2XPU28-_qrZr0XrxwwKLBybz-B9O3RkJGsQku5NAhrkgiwjxbTLgvZtru0lNbsek-UwzF9VOXcrx2vTbs7l9JnQo2dQTrcntmvrNayF8Fr7rrW20L3slUDwNmYORXGtD7S1-bLBjnER2A5u_bvmbQpPo6Bd0SkGNJGkbU2XKYqpDMpoVAnEOEaxx8M2GzXycstxxTdcQgZuvcr2AtJaIz>

A copy of a computer hard drive that was central to a Bend rape trial will be preserved in case of an appeal, a judge has ruled. NCVLI worked with partner attorney Jennifer Coughlin to protect the victim's privacy rights during trial when defense sought access to the victim's computer. The victim and Ms. Coughlin were recently featured on NBC'S Today show<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001RNclYXsE17BGcJ8m-Koq3j-72-tX9sl8oVawwFicsUwCVaSreLtJRloBmcJDLJwlzWS1gnTQ-vCySt22WfcPcuI6SXaTDtug2wuimU_RsIYfAynbJjk5BzEEeYONeh4MhKwoftTjWJjNG8zvDLtOpPRvNyitp2Zx>.

Numerous people have been arrested for revealing on social media the identity of a rape victim assaulted by a professional soccer player. The individuals arrested may be charged with the offense of publishing a matter likely to lead members of the public to identify the victim in a rape case, contrary to the Sexual Offenses (Amendment) Act 1992, which gives victims lifelong anonymity. North Wales Police say the alleged online comments were "profoundly disturbing" and contributed to the victim's "continued trauma".
