[Domestic Violence issues]

PROSECUTORS: I've been in contact w/ Christina Matthews, the Communications and Operations Manager for AEquitas, the organization hosting this training. She said that if there was a group of Oregon prosecutors who wanted to attend, to let her know and she would "save" seats. The National Institute on the Prosecution of Domestic Violence I (NIPDV) is a three and one-half day course designed to challenge participants to reevaluate their approach to prosecuting domestic violence. NIPDV explores the complex issues faced by prosecutors in balancing offender accountability and the impact of criminal prosecution on victims. In addition to practical case evaluation and trial advocacy skills, the curriculum addresses the development and improvement of culturally sensitive victim responses by prosecutors; examines the benefits of developing a coordinated community response; explains common injuries, relevant medical evidence and offers guidance on the use of medical experts; provides guidance in evidence-based prosecution methods with up-to-date Crawford analysis and recommended practices in responding to victim intimidation through innovative solutions and the doctrine of forfeiture by wrongdoing; explores ethical issues confronted by prosecutors; and offers prosecutors the ability to redefine outcomes and the very nature of justice in domestic violence cases.

NIPDV uses hypothetical case problems, role-playing exercises, small group discussions, mini-lectures, and faculty demonstrations. Participants employ hands-on case evaluation, preparation, and trial skills to understand domestic violence in the many contexts in which it occurs and examine their attitudes and practices. NIPDVI's highly interactive format enables prosecutors from different jurisdictions, with varied levels of experience, to learn from one another and engage in "real-life" activities and mock court proceedings that are readily transferable to their work. Prosecutors who have found strategies to overcome the unique challenges in handling domestic violence cases will share their success stories and techniques. Prosecutors will leave NIPDVI with new ideas and methods for keeping victims and communities safe and holding offenders accountable.

Application Process
This course is open to all prosecutors and attendance is free of charge; however, priority will be given to OVW grantees. There is no limit to the number of attendees from any jurisdiction. Seating is limited and applicants are encouraged to apply early. Applicants will be informed of acceptance by email.

Transportation and Lodging
Participants are responsible for making and paying for their own travel and lodging arrangements. To ensure the conference rate of $113 at the Courtyard Portland City Center, participants must call (800) 606-3717 and reference the National Institute on the Prosecution of Domestic Violence. The conference rate may be available three days prior to and after the conference.

U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) Grantees
OVW grant funds may be used to cover the cost of transportation and accommodations related to your attendance. Please contact your OVW grant administrator for additional information.

Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships may be available to offset the cost of to travel and accommodations. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship please submit an email including your OVW award number, an explanation of the economic situation in your jurisdiction, and a summary of how you and your jurisdiction may benefit from your attendance at NIPDVI to cmathews at aequitasresource.org.

CLE Credits
Attendance at this event will qualify participants for approximately twenty (20) continuing legal education credit hours including at least one (1) hour of ethics credit . Please check with your state bar association in reference to application requirements and related fees.
