GENDER VIOLENCE PREVENTION LEADERSHIP STRATEGIES FOR FIRST RESPONDERS

We are very lucky to have Educator, Author, Filmmaker and Social Theorist Dr. Jackson Katz coming to Southern Oregon for Sexual Assault Awareness Month!  Join us for a great training on Friday, April 26th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm with lunch included.  The training will be held at the Southern Oregon University Stevenson Union arena and because we have amazing sponsors the registration fee is only $25.00.  Attached to this e-mail you will find the training flyer and the registration form.

This is a must attend event for any person who helps sexual assault survivors, children or adults.  This  includes, but is not limited to, advocates, paramedics, nurses, doctors, counselors, law enforcement, prosecutors, child protection workers, school faculty, and many more!

Here is what Dr. Katz has provided for a description of this event:

Law enforcement and other responders to sexual violence play crucial roles in addressing sexual violence within our culture. This informative training will cover a number of topics of direct interest and relevance to law enforcement and first responders, both in their professional capacities and in their roles in the community.  The emphasis is on education for more effective leadership.  Topics covered include but are not limited to the need to rethink language used to talk about violence; dynamics of male peer culture that keep many men silent in the face of their peers' abusive behavior; the relationship between homophobia and sexism; the role of media in shaping gendered behavior; issues of racial and ethnic diversity; and the role of adult male leadership.  Real-life scenarios are presented in a workshop format that speak to the experiences of men and women in the workplace, community, and other areas of social life.

Participants will  learn new ways to think, talk and write about gender violence and be introduced to racially and ethnically sensitive, and culturally competent, ways to approach gender violence prevention, rather than through a one-size-fits-all approach.  Participants will gain new insights about the relationship between gender violence and other pressing social problems, such as youth violence, gang violence, homelessness, alcohol, methamphetamine and other forms of substance abuse, and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS.  This training is appropriate for any professional who responds to or encounters victims of sexual violence during their normal duties including but not limited to law enforcement, paramedics, prosecutors, advocates, campus public safety officers, corrections, probation and dispatchers.  All levels of rank are encouraged to attend.

Here is a biography on Dr. Katz:

Dr. Jackson Katz is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in gender violence prevention education in schools, the sports culture and the military, as well as for his pioneering work in critical media literacy.  An educator, author, filmmaker, and social theorist, Katz is co-founder of the multiracial, mixed-gender Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program at Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society.  Founded in 1993, MVP was one of the first programs to use a "bystander" model for gender violence prevention; Katz is one of the key architects of the bystander approach.  Today, MVP is the most widely utilized sexual and domestic violence prevention program in college and professional athletics.  It has been implemented by a quarter of the teams in the NFL, a number of Major League Baseball clubs, NASCAR, and many other sports organizations. Since 1997 Katz has directed the first worldwide gender violence prevention program in the history of the United States Marine Corps. MVP trainings have been held with U.S. Army personnel in Iraq; the U.S. Navy is currently piloting MVP in four sites around the world; and Katz has served as a subject matter expert and consultant for the U.S. Air Force.

Katz's award-winning educational video Tough Guise, his featured appearances in the films Wrestling With Manhood and Spin The Bottle, and his lectures in the U.S. and around the world have brought his insights into masculinity and gender violence to millions of college and high school students as well as professionals in education, human services, public health and law enforcement. He is also the author of an influential book entitled "The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help," published by Sourcebooks in 2006.  Since 1990, he has lectured at over 1400 colleges, prep schools, high schools, middle schools, professional conferences and military installations in 49 states, 6 Canadian provinces, and numerous countries around the world.  Katz holds academic degrees from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in cultural studies and education from UCLA.
