[DV_listserv] Most mass killings involve people who know one another

About two weeks ago, I sent out the email below about how the majority (57%) of those killed in mass shootings in the U.S. knew the perpetrator. Of the 57% who knew the perpetrator, 86% were either family members, former spouses/partners, co-workers, and/or neighbors.

Another mass shooting happened over the weekend. According to media reports,  a man in Houston killed his (ex)-girlfriend/mother of his son, her husband, their five children, and the child that the woman and the perpetrator had together. There was a lengthy standoff with police which ultimately led to the man's capture.

Per the AP report:

"Court records show Conley's criminal history dates back to at least 1988, with the most recent incident last month, when was charged with assault. In court documents, authorities said Conley had been arrested for allegedly assaulting Valerie Jackson. The attack happened at the home where the bodies were found; documents say the two were dating.
Court documents said Conley pushed Valerie Jackson's head against a refrigerator multiple times after she tried to stop him from disciplining her son with a belt. The case was still pending.
In 2013, he was charged with aggravated assault for threatening Jackson with a knife. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine months in the county jail.
In 2000, he was arrested for retaliation, accused of putting a knife to his then-girlfriend, threatening to kill her, her baby and himself. That came after she filed an assault charge against him for cutting her with a knife and punching her in the face. He was sentenced to five years in prison for retaliation. It was unclear if that woman was Valerie Jackson."

At least three people are dead and nine injured in a movie theater shooting that happened yesterday in Louisiana. At this time, the motive of the shooter is unknown.

A new report from USA Today provides insight into mass killings like the one that just happened:

Public massacres like Newtown or the Clackamas Town Center shooting account for 1 in 6 of  mass killings.
Breakups, estrangements and family arguments make up the majority of cases, though unrelated victims may be caught in the crossfire.
