On June 1st, the US Supreme Court reversed the federal convictions of a man, Anthony Elonis, for " transmit[ting] in interstate commerce "any communication containing any threat . . . to injure the person of another."  His convictions were based on rude, derogatory, and crass comments and rants posted on Facebook and other forms of social media. The postings were aimed at Elonis' estranged wife and others, including a federal law enforcement officer. These individuals perceived Elonis' comments and postings as threats.  The Supreme Court's holding was narrow but concerning, nonetheless. On August 14th, AEquitas will host a webinar on the impact of the Elonis decision on Stalking and other cases.
