About the training: For those of us in the counseling and substance abuse fields, one major goal we have is to help our clients improve the quality of their lives and their general psychological functioning. While we may have differing therapeutic orientations, there are common issues that we typically screen for such as an earlier history of trauma and the presence of substance abuse concerns or issues. One common issue that most therapists and substance abuse professionals have not been adequately trained to screen for is the presence of adult interpersonal abuse, whether as a victim or as a perpetrator. Because it is rarely screened for it is often not adequately incorporated into treatment planning and case conceptualization. As a result, otherwise effective therapeutic interventions may fall flat because we have overlooked a significant issue—the role of anger and abuse in the life of our client.

Routinely screening for and addressing issues of anger and abuse in your clients will improve the effectiveness of your clinical work as well as identify those clients who may need additional services beyond what you are able to offer. This is important given that more than a quarter of all women and a fifth of all men whom you see have been the victims of at least one act of domestic violence. Just as undiagnosed substance abuse issues can undermine otherwise effective therapeutic interventions, so can domestic violence. By identifying and addressing issues of domestic violence, clinicians will find the overall effectiveness of their interventions increasing, particularly in those individuals and couples who are dealing with these issues.

This seminar will provide a brief overview of what domestic violence is (and isn’t), how these issues may present in therapy, and how to effectively screen for and intervene with these issues. In addition, there will be some discussion of how typical clinical responses to domestic violence issues, such as anger management and couples counseling, may be ineffective and even aggravate the issue. By the end of this workshop you will have a clearer, more nuanced understanding of what domestic violence is, how to spot it in your clients, and what to do if you see it.
