In the past I've sent out various articles on the effects of trauma on Domestic and Sexual Violence victims. Here is another:
http://news.streetroots.org/2016/04/14/how-ptsd-can-get-our-genes
This article is specifically about PTSD, however I would note that even without a diagnosis of PTSD, the effects on victims and survivors of trauma and traumatic experiences can be long-lasting and incredibly disruptive; among many other things, trauma can significantly impact a victim's memory of and reaction to the traumatic event(s).
When asked if PTSD is a public health problem, the subject of the interview, Dr. Larry Sherman, answered in the affirmative:
"We have so many children and adults who are experiencing traumatic events in their lives that are going untreated or not getting properly treated. The result is we're going to have a huge population dealing with huge problems. It will cost society - there is the financial cost of having to do long-term therapy for people, and a cost for people who could otherwise be productive members of society who will have trouble getting on with their lives.
There are people who outwardly mask their behavior to get on with it. They're still left with the nightmares, the anxiety, and all the things that will make their life very difficult going forward, including developing depression and anxiety disorders. That's something they're living with their whole life. It's always with them at some level. That's a battle."
Here is another article on this topic:

And I've attached a great article by Dr. David Lisak on the neurobiology of trauma.
