A 14-year-old boy is accused of killing his grandfather, authorities say, after he and a friend set fire to his grandparents' Yamhill County home early Wednesday and left the scene with about $50,000 taken from the relatives.
Nicholas J.D. Aulig was arrested the day after the blaze that killed 79-year-old Dieter H. Aulig, injured 73-year-old Theresa Aulig and torched their rural Willamina home, according Capt. Chris Ray, a Yamhill County Sheriff's Office spokesman.
Nicholas Aulig is accused of murder, first-degree arson and first-degree aggravated theft. The second teen, Jacob T. Brooks, 15, was arrested the day of the fire and is being held on suspicion of attempted first-degree arson and first-degree aggravated theft. Both teens are being held at the Yamhill County Juvenile Detention Center in McMinnville.
The Oregonian/OregonLive typically doesn't name juvenile suspects unless they are facing Measure 11 crimes.
Theresa Aulig sustained burns to her upper body, but has been released from a hospital, Ray said. The money taken from the home has since been found.
The fire was reported a little before 2:40 a.m. at a home on Southwest Tenbush Lane. After the blaze was extinguished, it was apparent that the fire was intentionally caused, Ray said. He declined to say what caused the fire.
Nicholas Aulig lived with his grandparents and authorities began searching for him when he wasn't found at the house, Ray said. Other items taken from the grandparents' home were also recovered by police, according to Ray. The case remains under investigation.
