FVCC UPDATE / May 2018

The National Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls was recognized on May 5th. We saw a wave of awareness raising and activism on this day, with people getting involved in person and online with #NotInvisible<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001PSM5P3Ut0mtTqquMoxrNc5PDOlBy9lBN35CvJF8tQrcGDS2T9rYoOrpl7TXNgDmJlSEe6xN-Ru_djDhzUmx0_wdPR3Wp82GDLTRhS-sxKXByYJGF6EStGitnqe1QgGzZUkNRKx-I5Q6Y6yNvjT4OrQlw-Qze3DYW4kRtVTb5nAGLWN2otcIQgL0NNZSqE2JRGCXHxLvEYad_CiPNDWPKwzaeVaE1zaUQjXl2l9iH4wsAY-KxJW9VwzI-_vhu92BRghCqKmVYrY-TA26svauv6v1Q_iJpRGWH&c=uNnTgYu2P4P8MhaXWNdkLDgyyxyrIsYmRcHvHSq1CE2zJZWLd-Depg==&ch=8AQIv3KgBlIAD_n78Zx0EGfl_eawyB7NZODySn6LRBO1bYwt3s0S3A==>.

It is known that on some reservations, Native women are murdered at ten times the national average and 84% of Native women have experience violence in their lifetime.<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001PSM5P3Ut0mtTqquMoxrNc5PDOlBy9lBN35CvJF8tQrcGDS2T9rYoOrpl7TXNgDmJoyNtMaGvw1vZ8kpVp0pBGOPRDKk5LWeT00-8v4LhPj2kSsYAwTdmqo9HLFkLiHDuWmEB71_HCaPHBkybvsjtEPx9PTl44YY3qncLkglX-vKKcHf3dqzpYiwrkwrdDfkFayQkAQ26TFb-4XwSi0FSmkDG6CPX68Qj_EdzjjlKqAs3zThAvV1DCkO7aymuo1qMckRpE7br2BoDlUcEwsK0VdnBOyhp7TsPGpX_UA0H_q9beTjXG4Gbz62-sOnTh52C&c=uNnTgYu2P4P8MhaXWNdkLDgyyxyrIsYmRcHvHSq1CE2zJZWLd-Depg==&ch=8AQIv3KgBlIAD_n78Zx0EGfl_eawyB7NZODySn6LRBO1bYwt3s0S3A==> It should go without saying that these rates of violence are unacceptable. As Cherrah Giles, the Board President of the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center says, "The legacy of genocide is the epidemic of violence we experience from birth to death. For our Native sisters who are missing and murdered, we need every person to take a stand and join in our effort calling for justice."

The day of awareness and continued movement builds upon Savanna's Act, legislation introduced by U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp that aims to combat the epidemic of murdered and missing Native women and girls in this country. You can read a one page fact sheet on Savanna's Act here<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001PSM5P3Ut0mtTqquMoxrNc5PDOlBy9lBN35CvJF8tQrcGDS2T9rYoOrpl7TXNgDmJJw9dXQIaXFE6IPTAB_KoV4F6fbWCMnv8k5mUwrKyhMyGX7JYTmgZpMUV7wXUniUtOw-i1nQ7vXEkwlruzQ4U26wC5tk8kBLQb2fgXeNI18wWbiz6bBFjOEq2it4FQERgJ13V73zIdH9cz1HYIBWh8BozWBejCMXHcFp6MuyWWg5bg94-_dhT6La2874jcm1RoeSNqSEqBz3GV5dt73_yWQWlhM_PU6oUdBxJDp4deRqWMz-y528vgvamb-navd2r&c=uNnTgYu2P4P8MhaXWNdkLDgyyxyrIsYmRcHvHSq1CE2zJZWLd-Depg==&ch=8AQIv3KgBlIAD_n78Zx0EGfl_eawyB7NZODySn6LRBO1bYwt3s0S3A==>.
