The Training Institute is excited to offer our Advanced Course on Non-Fatal Strangulation Prevention, Class No. 41, in a virtual format! Strangulation has been identified as one of the most lethal forms of domestic violence and sexual assault. This training will be provided by the leading experts in America and held the last Friday in February and every Friday in March (Friday: February 27, March 6, 13, 20, 27, 2026) from 8 AM to 2 PM PST with pre-course homework and optional networking sessions from 2 PM to 2:30 PM PST.

The Advanced Course covers:
· The most current research and emerging case law on domestic violence and sexual assault strangulation crimes
· The link between stranglers, cop killers, and terrorists
· Understanding lethality and the need for training
· A survivor's perspective
· Lessons learned from San Diego
· Anatomy, physiology, medical signs and symptoms
· Long term consequences, delayed death, and fatal strangulation
· Need for imaging and how to advocate for implementation
· The role of all first responders, including dispatchers, paramedics, and crime scene investigators
· Investigative strategies, report writing, and interviewing witnesses and the suspect
· Clinical documentation and the forensic domestic violence/strangulation exam
· Successful prosecution strategies
· New strategies for advocacy and working with traumatized victims
· Screening for traumatic brain injury and medical advocacy
· Development of local experts
· Use of experts in court, including tips for testifying
· Advocating for victim safety from the time of arrest through probation
· Court Considerations
· Understanding and integrating ACES and science of HOPE in your work
· Best practices and developing an implementation plan, including a county-wide protocol
· Overcoming typical defenses, including self defense, the sex defense and staged crime scenes
Attendees will have the opportunity to:
· Work together as a multidisciplinary team and in affinity groups
· Conduct a risk assessment and develop an advocacy plan
· Read top research, court cases, and review court transcripts
· Apply trauma-informed investigation and advocacy techniques
· Observe a mock direct and cross examination
· Identify experts, practice developing an expert witness and practice cross- examination
· Bring a strangulation case for review by faculty and experts
· Develop strategies for implementing best practices in local communities
· Practice giving a 5-minute presentation on strangulation
· Network with attendees

More space - Due to the elimination of a physical training space and lower travel costs, more people can attend the course than ever before!

BRN Credits:
California District Attorneys Association is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), Provider #CEP115893, for Contact Hours. Board of Registered Nursing credits are offered with this training for a fee of $65.
***Attendees must attend all days of training, complete mandatory assignments, and sign-in & out daily to receive credits.

This course consists of 5 Days (30 hours) of training. To receive full credit for the course, attendees must attend all sessions, complete mandatory assignments, and actively participate. Staff will verify before sending Certificates of Attendance.
This course will be held via the Zoom meetings platform so you will need to have a computer that can access and use this platform, as well as a working camera/microphone to participate.
Our team will evaluate each application to bring a cross-section of professionals to participate in a learning exchange with other experts and trainers. Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance to the training. We will notify attendees of their acceptance status on or before February 20th.
