                                2008, there were at least 17 deaths associated 
                                with domestic violence in Oregon. In 2009, there 
                                were 39. To date in 2010, there have been 43. 
                                These numbers are jarring, and would be higher 
                                if we included other forms of family violence. 
                                Domestic violence can happen to anyone, and the 
                                numbers indicate that it's a growing

                                year, elected leaders across the nation proclaim 
                                October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In 
                                Multnomah County, this October is no different. 
                                The board of commissioners recognized the month 
                                unanimously last week. But when the numbers 
                                speak so clearly, a once-yearly proclamation 
                                isn't enough. The severity of the problem calls 
                                for every person to be engaged in ending it 
                                year-round. </SPAN></P>
