Just today, Erin Andrews, a sports broadcaster and TV personality, was awarded $55 million dollars by a Nashville jury. The verdict was awarded against a Nashville hotel that, unbeknownst to her, allowed Andrews’ stalker to rent the room
next to hers where he subsequently drilled holes in their adjoining door and filmed her while she dressed/undressed. He later released the video online where it has been viewed tens of millions of times.

The stalker was eventually arrested, charged, and sent to prison. However, the trauma and pain of Andrews’ experience, as for so many victims, continued long after her stalker was prosecuted and convicted. Unfortunately, too, Andrews faced
the victim-shaming and judgment that too often accompanies disclosures of abuse.

This is an interesting article that explores the topic of what
‘we’, society, do to victims who choose to disclose and who have the ability to participate in seeking justice—however that might look for that individual person. If only more victims had the capacity to seek justice not only in the criminal justice
system but also in the civil legal realm.
