<p class="MsoNormal">**The study suggests that laws prohibiting firearm possession by persons subject to IPV-related restraining orders may be associated with lower rates of firearm-related intimate partner homicide but only if the law includes an explicit
requirement that these persons relinquish their firearms.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">**State laws that both prohibited the possession of firearms by persons subject to an IPV-related restraining order AND required these persons to surrender their firearm were associated with firearm-related intimate partner homicide rates
that were 14.0% lower than in states without these laws. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <i>**Oregon’s current RO laws allow for courts to order prohibition of firearms by a Respondent. However, it is up to each county to implement a firearm dispossession protocol to ensure that the prohibited
firearms are, indeed, surrendered. Currently, only five of 36 Oregon counties have such protocols.

<p class="MsoNormal">**The study suggests that there were 75 fewer intimate-partner related homicides in 2015 among states with restraining order relinquishment laws than would have been expected without these laws. The study also suggests that that if all
50 states had such laws in place, there would have been an additional 120 fewer intimate partner homicides across the nation in 2015 than would have been expected without these laws.
