New Suicide Prevention Training Series

Webinar: Reviewing Suicides

[A close up of a sign Description automatically generated]
The CT Suicide Advisory Board (CTSAB), in collaboration with multiple partners, has created the attached, "CT Public Health Alert and Call to Action for Youth Suicide."

We urge you to review it carefully, take action, and share it broadly with your youth-serving contacts.

The CTSAB monitors data related to suicide across the lifespan, and though there was a significant reduction in suicide attempts and deaths across the lifespan here and the U.S. duringthe spring and summer months, which was an expected initial impact of the COVID experience, we are now observing a rebound effect.

Tragically, CT has lost 7 youth to suicide thus far in 2020 with 4 deaths in October alone. Our hope is that the Alert will increase awareness and vigilance to recognize and respond to the existing mental/emotional health needs of youth.

This Alert may increase press inquiries statewide. We've done a lot in CT over the years to educate the press on how to safely report on suicide death so as to not contribute toward the risk of contagion by sensationalizing or glamorizing suicide. In the event you hear from press, here's the guidance<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Freportingonsuicide.org%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cacollier%40mphi.org%7C64ab40062032441b839208d87d0cc7bb%7Ca4405b416d4f4d5190dd22ba251725f5%7C0%7C0%7C637396841176865728%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=Ff6a2QtNt4HYobr547JqjOZlKAWLi0aSOuBHfY5fOo8%3D&reserved=0> (https://reportingonsuicide.org<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Freportingonsuicide.org%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cacollier%40mphi.org%7C64ab40062032441b839208d87d0cc7bb%7Ca4405b416d4f4d5190dd22ba251725f5%7C0%7C0%7C637396841176875724%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=DkSG1vnM397L02hTPQNKhhwl0zVAV03GFpF4ZIzry%2Bo%3D&reserved=0>)to share with them.

Additionally, please ask that they include the following resources at the end of their articles- "If you or someone you know is in crisis and needs help, please call 1(800)273-TALK (8255) or 211 in CT or text the Crisis Text Line: CT to 741741, and in an Emergency Call or Text 911."

Suicide Prevention Training Encourages Upstream Approaches

NWCPHP's new online resource, the Suicide Prevention Training Series<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nwcphp.org%2Ftraining%2Fsuicide-prevention-training-series&data=04%7C01%7Cacollier%40mphi.org%7C40e87245f2284aa7e79008d8870b9508%7Ca4405b416d4f4d5190dd22ba251725f5%7C0%7C0%7C637407831126388103%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=plnqr%2BzG5sieqy18L%2B18f51j9AcP1wa4PcxNpsTHoPc%3D&reserved=0>, introduces learners to upstream prevention efforts from around the region, with an emphasis on community engagement and data-informed decision making.

Through videos and comics, learners follow the story of a small, rural public health department struggling with how to address a recent increase in suicides in their community. Pulling from work by public health leaders in Idaho and Washington, at the stateand local levels, the series humanizes the struggles of losing a community member to suicide and provides context to the interrelated challenges of developing prevention efforts.

"We were inspired by some of our favorite graphic novels and comics, which are exciting tools for adult education as well as for communicating health information to diverse audiences. Using this storytelling format helped us convey grief and other emotionsthat accompany the death of a loved one and use characters who can grow and learn, like real public health leaders," said NWCPHP instructional designer Kevin deVoss.

The no-cost, self-paced series can be accessed by creating an account in PH LearnLink.
