New Enhancing Fatality Review with Lessons from Brain Science


New OCAS: Statewide Programs Manager position

This guidance was developed in collaboration with Child Safety Forward, a program of the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities, and funded by the Department of Justice to help fatality review teams incorporate critical aspects of brain science into every aspect of their review processes. Enhancing Fatality Review with Lessons from Brain Science provides:

  1.  An overview of critical terms like brain architecture, toxic stress, hope science, resiliency
  2.  Describes adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and positive childhood experiences (PCEs)
  3.  Offers vital discussion questions to ask during the death scene investigation and case review
  4.  Discusses the Social-Ecological model and its application for pulling together the key concepts
  5.  Provides tools, including a prevention matrix, for incorporating brain science into fatality review
