New Parents Under Pressure
New Identifying Solutions for Equitable Outcomes in SUID: Thriving Native Babies
Parents Under Pressure
Fatality Review Colleagues,
Your fatality review teams have unique insights into the diverse challenges parents and caregivers face and how these challenges impact fetal, infant, and child health. The U.S. Surgeon General recently released Parents Under Pressure: The U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on the Mental Health & Well-Being of Parents.<https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/parents-under-pressure.pdf> This advisory provides an overview of the state of caregiver stress and wellbeing, the relationship between caregiver stress and mental health, and the impacts of parental/caregiver mental health.
Finally, it provides concrete strategies for supporting caregiver mental health that may be especially helpful for fatality review teams considering caregiver mental health in the context of prevention. Strategies are recommended for:
* Local and state governments
* Employers
* Communities and community organizations
* Health and social services systems and professionals
* Researchers
* Family and friends
Thank you for all you do to support your community and its families.

Identifying Solutions for Equitable Outcomes in SUID: Thriving Native Babies
This 2-part webinar series will explore the historical experiences and underlying causes of preventable infant sleep-related deaths in Black and American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) families. Faculty will describe the historical and current injustices that impact access to healthcare and support, which contribute to higher rates of SUID for Black and AI/AN infants, as well as the cultural influences that impact infant sleep practices among families. Attendees will learn successful community intervention strategies to improve health equity and reduce disparities in SUID.
Session 1: Working to Keep Our Babies Safe
Date: September 10, 2024
Time: 10:00 - 11:30am PT | 11:00 - 12:30pm MT | 12:00 - 1:30pm CT | 1:00 - 2:30pm ET
Faculty Speakers: Stacy Scott, Ph.D. (NICHQ), Zsakeba Henderson (NICHQ), Nakeitra Burse, DrPH, MS (Six Dimensions), Sharla Smith, PhD, MPH (University of Kansas Medical Center School of Medicine)
This webinar will illustrate the importance of striving for fair access to healthcare and family support; it's essential to acknowledge the historical and ongoing disparities faced by Black families. These disparities result from past and current events, socio-economic challenges, and cultural influences. By engaging the community authentically, we can work towards reducing SUID rates, which involves raising awareness and providing education. In this effort, healthcare providers, community organizations, social service agencies, and other stakeholders can collaborate on initiatives to enhance infant health and decrease infant mortality rates.

This webinar will contextualize the high rates of SIDS/SUIDS among the AI/AN population amidst historically rooted policies and present-day repercussions that have gravely impacted thriving Native communities. Public health personnel, clinicians, hospital systems, social service agencies, and community-based organizations will gain an integrated perspective on this dire phenomenon, but also solutions to engage Native families, communities, and organizations to promote thriving Native babies.
