Fatality Review Team News May 2024
New Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report
[A blue and yellow logo Description automatically generated]
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released an update on unintentional drowning fatalities in the United States in their Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Notably, there was a national increase in unintentional drowning deaths in 2020, 2021, and 2022, compared to 2019. Disparities are present among age and racial demographics. To read the update, click here<https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/73/wr/mm7320e1.htm?s_cid=mm7320e1_w%5d>.
The National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention has a Drowning Death Scene Investigation and Child Death Review (CDR) Project for jurisdictions conducting death scene investigations of drowning fatalities among infants and children.
With funding, expanded death scene investigations are conducted, which involve collecting information regarding environmental factors, socioeconomic circumstances, and other barriers. This information can enhance collected data to better understand and address disparities within a community. Ongoing funding for this project is available.
For more information about the drowning prevention pilot, visit this webpage<https://ncfrp.org/cdr/drowning-case-registry/>. Contact Gabby Fraley at gfraley at mphi.org<mailto:gfraley at mphi.org> with any questions.
Sincerely,
Lauren Sawyer
