 Ed Arabas<http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs007/1103092363192/img/3.jpg>
The GISCI Board of Directors is proud to recognize Mr. Ed Arabas, GISP,
as the Outstanding GISP for 2011. This is the first time this award has
been given and Ed is a worthy choice. Ed is a stalwart champion for the
GISP. During his two year tenure on the GISCI Board, he was President
and Vice President. He has also served on the Certification Committee
and the Core Competencies Working Group. The GISCI Board of Directors
would like to thank Ed Arabas for his efforts. Thank you, Ed, for all
that you have done.

Arabas with the Outstanding GISP 2011 award at the NSGIC Conference in
Boise, ID.

Congratulations to Our Newest GISPs

One of our newest GISPs was emailed that his application was approved.
His response was, "Thank you so much. Best news to hear ever. Made my
day!"

Do you remember that feeling? You finally completed the GISP
application, you've mailed it in, and now you are waiting ... and
waiting ... and hoping you filled it out correctly ... and hoping you
get approved even though you know you qualify ... and then you get the
email or your packet it in the mail! You did it! You are a GISP!

What we do matters. Our work as GISPs, our contributions to the GIS
industry, and our volunteer work for GISCI are important.

Here is a list of our most recent GISPs:

*	Aimee Dubois
*	Benjamin Hoffman
*	Yang Huang
*	John Hickcok

Quote of the Week

I compliment young practitioners who have persisted to success through
the depths of a faltering economy. They are GISP heroes. ... Anyone who
survives the Great Recession with family and job and health unbroken
should be commended. They will be remaking the track so we can get to
where we want to go. - Dave Skiles, GISP

Color for Maps and Type for Maps

A Review by Hans van der Maarel

Gretchen Peterson, author of "GIS Cartography - A Guide To Effective Map
Design" has written two e-books that are intented to offer cartographers
guidance on two important aspects of map design: color usage and
typography.

Colors For Maps offers the reader a range of different color palettes,
subdivided in coordinated palettes, differentiated palettes and color
ramps (10 of each). All of these are presented both as a simple
collection of color swatches, but also in a map and as a map legend. In
addition to that, a deuteranope simulation is presented to give the
cartographer a clue as to how a reader with deuteranopia, the most
common form of color blindness. Unfortunately not all colors are equally
represented in the sample map, especially in the case of the
differentiated palettes this is awkward, since the deuteranope
simulation only covers the map.

The color swatches are presented along with their RGB and Hex color
values and an ArcGIS .style file is supplied along with this e-book,
making it easier to incorporate. Unfortunately CMYK values are not
covered.

Type For Maps is set up in a similar way, it shows the reader a number
of different combinations consisting of a serif and a sans-serif
typeface. These are divided in "standard" typefaces (i.e. the ones most
likely to be available on any Windows PC), free typefaces and for-fee
typefaces. The typefaces are presented through an alphabet, sample
sentences (which also cover different styles of the typefaces) and on a
map. There is also a short paragraph of text describing the typeface and
its advantages. Finally, a number of symbol fonts is presented.

Type For Maps acknowledges that it offers just a small sampling of the
enormous range of typefaces available, and suggest some additional
resources.

The primary intended audience for these e-books appears to be novice
cartographers, coming from a GIS background. Both are certainly useful
for more experienced cartographers as well, especially if they are
looking for additional inspiration on these aspects of cartography. In
short, they would be excellent value for money for anybody interested in
increasing their range of cartographic abilities.
