Happy New Year!
Please join us this month for the kickoff meeting of the Power Line Work Group hosted by the Oregon Utilities Framework Implementation Team (Utilities FIT). This group will foster strategic collaboration to develop and maintain power line geospatial data in Oregon. If you are interested in attending the meeting, please fill out the Doodle Poll linked below to indicate your availability, by COB, Friday, Jan. 6.

There are a number of reasons why GIS professionals in Oregon (and those they serve) might need GIS data showing the location and attributes of power lines. Our goal for this initial meeting is to describe those use cases, evaluate the power line data currently hosted by the Utilities FIT, and identify some concrete steps we can take to incrementally improve that data and plan for its long-term stewardship. Currently, power line data is often stored in proprietary databases and is hard to access.
Membership in this FIT work group is voluntary and open to all levels of government, utilities, academia, and the private sector. Members of the work group can participate in a variety of ways, including:
* Describing and documenting the use cases for power line data in Oregon
* Contributing to the development of power line data in Oregon
* Providing expertise, advice, or contacts that may assist the data development and stewardship
Micah Babinski, GIS Project Manager for Elyon International, has volunteered to chair the work group, under the Utilities FIT. Micah works on location with the Bureau of Land Management Oregon State Office in Portland, where he coordinates the mapping of surface disturbances (including power lines) in Greater Sage-Grouse habitat. Micah is a former member of Prep FIT and has extensive experience facilitating multi-agency GIS collaboration. Micah can be reached for questions by email (mbabinski at blm.gov<mailto:mbabinski at blm.gov>) or phone (503-808-6305).
Attending this kickoff meeting does not obligate you to become a member of the work group. Prior to the meeting, please give a quick read through of the proposed work group charter, attached.
We hope to see you there! Have a safe and happy Holidays.
Warm Regards,
--
