This on line resource is derived in part from the print Atlas of Oregon Lakes published by Oregon State University Press in 1985, but covers additional lakes and publishes a wider range of information than possible 25 years ago. The project was funded by EPA and done in cooperation with Oregon DEQ. An important feature of the atlas was to provide a vehicle for access to lake water quality data in the Pacific Northwest Water Quality Exchange Database. As was the case with the print version, the on-line atlas is intended to meet the needs of scientists and the general public. The kinds of data available in the atlas include: water quality, dconditions in the lake’s drainage basin, bathymetric maps, lake photographs, and downloadable PDF maps of individual lakes. The site features custom cartography for its background maps that uses streams and lakes from the National Hydro Database and other best available data for Oregon. The user has a choice of a “naturalistic” map background based on the NLCD or an “ownership” map showing public land ownership. Links are provided to the ODFW weekly fishing report and Oregon Marine Board access points will be included on the maps in the near future. The bathymetric data for 180 lakes will be made available in the future through the GEO website.
