I wanted to follow up on the email that Diana just sent out about the new geospatial capabilities included as part of the data.oregon.gov <https://data.oregon.gov/> platform (also as discussed during recent GPL meetings).

Yesterday, Socrata released two new components to data.oregon.gov: the Mondara <http://www.socrata.com/mondara/> extension and the ‘Esri Integration module’.

Mondara, which is based on the Geoserver/OpenLayers software stack, allows users to upload data in KML or Shapefile format, and essentially hosts these as a service in the cloud (much like ArcGIS.com). The services can then be accessed through data.oregon.gov’s map view, or through Socrata’s Soda API <http://opendata.socrata.com/api/docs/> (WMS and WFS service offerings are being looked into next). The user can select what fields are displayed when you click on features in the service. In the map view, you can view the attributes as a table (again, the user can adjust what’s visible), create filters, search for features, export to various formats (attribute table only). You can also mash up the services with other map data on the data.oregon.gov platform.

The Esri integration, as it stands right now lets you add individual ArcGIS REST Service layers (as opposed to groups of layers) into the data.oregon.gov map view. With it, the user gets most of the features available via the Mondara extension (e.g., search, filter, export, table view). One notable piece missing from the Esri Integration is that map services added to data.oregon.gov cannot be ‘mashed-up’ with any other data (e.g., from the Mondara extension or maps of geocoded point locations).

Many of the features on data.oregon.gov (i.e., publishing local data to the ‘cloud’, registering web services) are also available in ArcGIS.com <http://www.arcgis.com/home/> (and GEO’s ArcGIS for Organizations site <http://geo.maps.arcgis.com> ), and both platforms have their own benefits and drawbacks. Feel free to test both of these systems out, GEO would very much be interested in your feedback which we’ll relay to either Socrata or Esri. If you want an invitation to GEO’s ArcGIS for Organization site, currently in Beta, or have questions about publishing to data.oregon.gov (you can create an account for that here <https://data.oregon.gov/login> ), let me know.

Thanks,

Erik

There are two news ways to integrate Geospatial on Data.Oregon.gov!

1. Import a geospatial dataset. Socrata calls this capability "Mondara". I'll call it a pretty darn cool way to allow others to combine normal dataset data with a geospatial dataset. It's available now and there is not cost to you. Learn more about what this can do for your organization here: http://www.socrata.com/mondara/

2. Set up a direct link to your existing ESRI GIS Server. This will update your GIS data on Data.Oregon.gov automatically. You will want to contact your GIS team in order to do this.
