Subject: Other log alert: Historical map atlas of slick convenient access
Not strictly a geology thing, but topography is landform is geology.
ESRI has released a USGS Historical Topographic Map Explorer application that allows users to access historical maps as high-resolution georeferenced images for use in web mapping applications. The web display features a timeline to easily select the desired maps.
http://historicalmaps.arcgis.com/usgs/
You can zoom to the area of interest (double clicking or magnify tool), then mark a point by single click, which spawns a timeline showing the names, scales, and dates of publication for the topographic maps that cover your mark. A tap on any of those anchors brings a particular map onscreen (download button present, too).
Multiple maps can be stacked onscreen: in my testdrive, for example, the 1901 Baker City map (1:125,000) in background, overlain by the
1965 Baker quad (1:24,000).
