Subject: ACTION REQUIRED by May 31, 2020: 3DEP Public Seasketch Project Retention Review Tool
Colleagues,
You are receiving this message because over the course of the last year you utilized the 3DEP BAA - Public Areas of Interest Project <https://survey.geoplatform.gov/index.php/222893?lang=en> Collector Tool to submit a project AOI to be published on the NOAA sponsored Seasketch: U.S. Federal Mapping Coordination - A Demonstration Site for Federal Mapping Data Acquisition Coordination site<https://www.seasketch.org/#projecthomepage/5272840f6ec5f42d210016e4>. The 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) utilizes this shared system for planning, coordinating partnerships, and tracking elevation data acquisition projects. The system supports the maintenance and publishing of:
* Mapping Priorities: Needs, Requirements
* Planned and Ongoing Mapping Projects
* Existing Data
Current and near-term priorities for the acquisition of lidar data for Federal, State and Local agencies are captured and displayed as Mapping Priorities: Needs, Requirements - Topographic Lidar 3DEP Areas of Interest.
To assure the validity of these near term priorities, project POCs are notified on an annual basis and asked to validate that their AOI remains a near term need / requirement. Use the 2020 Existing Project Validation Tool<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=urWTBhhLe02TQfMvQApUlADAZaKzUv1GsarGRxTRB_lUQUJCNVhGUTBCU0tJN05LVDVDOEVUWTBTNyQlQCN0PWcu> to verify your AOI.
The verification should not take more than 5 minutes of your time. The USGS has automatically removed project AOIs that fall entirely within geographic areas that are currently under contract or designated to be awarded for acquisition in 2020. These 2020 projects will be displayed under Planned and Ongoing Mapping Projects. AOIs with partial overlap of 2020 projects remain in the system. Project POCS are encouraged to remove these AOIs and upload new shapefiles representing the modified AOI. If we do not hear from you by May 31, 2020, your project will not be considered a valid requirement and will be removed.
At the end of FY19, 67% of the Nation has 3DEP data available or in progress. To view the current status of data acquisition, see this link<https://www.usgs.gov/core-science-systems/ngp/3dep/3dep-data-acquisition-status-maps>. To view where completed elevation data are available and download lidar point clouds and DEMs, visit The National Map Viewer<https://viewer.nationalmap.gov/basic/> and click on Elevation Products and Elevation Source Data. The DEMs are also available for use directly in a GIS application without having to download files through the 3DEP web coverage service<https://apps.nationalmap.gov/3depdem/>. Another tool is the Lidar Explorer<http://prd-tnm.s3.amazonaws.com/LidarExplorer/index.html#/>, which allows users to discover and visualize 3DEP lidar point cloud data within a dynamic web viewer.
The USGS anticipates funding another round of projects through the USGS Broad Agency Announcement (<https://www.usgs.gov/core-science-systems/ngp/3dep/broad-agency-announcements?qt-science_support_page_related_con=3#qt-science_support_page_related_con>BAA) for 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) in FY21. Once again, we encourage you to validate / update your current AOIs at your earliest convenience. In addition the 3DEP program invites you to utilize the Updated 3DEP Project Collector Tool<https://survey.geoplatform.gov/index.php/222893?lang=en> to enter new AOIs under consideration for acquisition in the next 1 to 3 years. Federal, State and Local agencies utilize this information to identify overlapping Areas of Interest and seek partners to develop proposals for submission to the upcoming BAA. The FY21 BAA is expected to be released to the public in August 2020.
Should you have any problems utilizing the 2020 Existing Project Validation Too<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=urWTBhhLe02TQfMvQApUlADAZaKzUv1GsarGRxTRB_lUQUJCNVhGUTBCU0tJN05LVDVDOEVUWTBTNyQlQCN0PWcu>l or the Updated 3DEP Project Collector Tool<https://survey.geoplatform.gov/index.php/222893?lang=en> please contact Diana Thunen (dthunen at usgs.gov<mailto:dthunen at usgs.gov>). General questions regarding the 3DEP Program may be submitted to 3dep at usgs.gov<mailto:3dep at usgs.gov>. General questions regarding the BAA may be submitted to gs_baa at usgs.gov<mailto:gs_baa at usgs.gov>.
