As such, you may find that I’m not asking the question in a very clear manner. My apologies. Please ask for clarification if you need it. Just wanted to make that caveat up front.

As part of trying to help ODOT make the case that there’s money to be saved if we can eliminate geospatial data duplication, we’ve been working with the following list of raster and vector data sets that represent the basic Framework data we have agreed to share. At GEO, we are making progress at offering all this data as web services, both REST and WMS. The assumption is that will meet most everyone’s need and will eliminate the necessity for multiple agencies to store and create these data sets individually.

What we need to know now is how much data storage we can ultimately eliminate by offering the data as web services. The original question was about how much data storage we could eliminate at the State Data Center, but it would also be very helpful to know how much storage would be eliminated over all, not just at the SDC. So for those of you state agencies receiving this message who are now storing versions of these data sets, and for whom the navigatOR web services would satisfy your need and allow you to stop storing that data redundantly, please let me know as soon as possible, preferably by the end of next week. I need to know the size of the data sets you would ultimately eliminate if we are able to meet your need. You can put those numbers below next to each data set in your reply. Thanks!

Cy

Bioscience

Boundaries

Cadastral

Climate

Geoscience

Geodetic Control

Hazards

Preparedness

Published maps (DRGs, etc.)

Transportation

Utilities

Hydrography

Indexes

Land Use/Cover

LiDAR (LAS & derived products)

Topography (DEM/contours)

Aerial Imagery

Cy Smith, Statewide GIS Coordinator

DAS/EISPD Geospatial Enterprise Office

President, Urban/Regional Info Sys Assoc.
