Thanks to those of you that replied to my message below. Several of you said something similar, which I will paraphrase as, “We would still have to keep a copy of some of the Framework data because web services are great but limit our ability to perform geospatial analysis and/or to make aesthetically pleasing maps, both of which are often required to support our agency business processes.”<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'>From what I’ve heard, it appears that providing access to the Framework data via web services is valuable and will save some (undetermined) amount of storage space for state agencies, both those currently in the SDC and those that aren’t. Part of the Data Storage Reduction business case includes an option to provide Active Directory access to data at the SDC. If that option is ultimately implemented, we will be able to provide direct access to the Framework data to state agencies, in addition to providing FTP and web services access. At GEO, we are making progress at offering all this data as web services, both REST and WMS. The assumption is that will meet most everyone’s need and will eliminate the necessity for multiple agencies to store and create these data sets individually.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>What we need to know now is how much data storage we can ultimately eliminate by offering the data as web services. The original question was about how much data storage we could eliminate at the State Data Center, but it would also be very helpful to know how much storage would be eliminated over all, not just at the SDC. So for those of you state agencies receiving this message who are now storing versions of these data sets, and for whom the navigatOR web services would satisfy your need and allow you to stop storing that data redundantly, please let me know as soon as possible, preferably by the end of next week.
