Subject: [AASG]: State of Arizona adopts USGIN for Natural Resources Decision Support System

The Arizona Natural Resources Review Council today unanimously approved a plan to develop a Natural Resources Decision Support System (NRDSS) to link data, documents, and GIS layers among our nine natural resources, environmental, and transportation
agencies, and with corresponding federal agencies. The system will be built around the USGIN (US Geoscience Information Network) data integration framework, which underlies the DOE-funded National Geothermal Data System (NGDS). The plan now goes to Arizona
Governor Jan Brewer for implementation.

USGIN will serve to integrate three components: the Arizona GIS repository and clearinghouse (AZGEO), a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) as the designated source of information from federal agencies operating in Arizona (under a White House
Executive Order from 1982), and a system Clearinghouse for discovering, accessing, and integrating documents and data which will be available via system and agency web portals using online catalogs.

As in NGDS, each data provider will maintain control of their data, documents, and maps, and make them accessible using web services via a distributed network. The federal agencies will share their materials from a node on the system
created under the auspices of the Western Regional Partnership, a consortium of 20+ federal agencies and governors of 5 western states. The NRDSS can be expanded to include other agencies.

We believe this will be the first interoperable state natural resources data network in the country, the first digital SPOC, and the first federal-state system that meets the requirements of the White House Open Data Access initiative.

Thanks for all your support and contributions to demonstrating the viability and value of USGIN and NGDS. We will provide a link to the approved NRRC report as soon as it is posted online. We will be pleased to work with any State Survey
that would like to pursue similar initiatives in your states. We understand the Western Governors Association is watching this development with keen interest.
