See this announcement from the Institute of Medice. They are seeking experts for a new study looking at front of the package nutrition rating systems and symbols. Samia Dear Colleague: The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is searching for experts in the scientific, technical, and medical professions to be considered for a study committee titled Examination of Front of Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols (Phase I). The sponsors are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration. The Phase I committee will undertake a review of front-of-package nutrition rating systems and symbols, focusing on the elements of the nutrition rating criteria and the science underlying the front-of-package systems. The Phase I committee will also plan for a second phase that will include consideration of consumer perspectives and responses to symbols/icons. The specific tasks for Phase I are to: identify front-of-package systems being used by manufacturers, supermarkets, health organizations, and governments in the United States and abroad; consider the purpose and overall merits of front-label nutrition icons; identify the criteria underlying the systems and evaluate their scientific basis; consider advantages and disadvantages of various approaches for adults and children; and, using knowledge gained from its compilation and assessment of front-of-package systems, plan the second phase (to be executed as a separate activity) that would consider the potential benefits of a single, standardized front-of-package food guidance system regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and would develop conclusions about which system(s) are most effective in promoting health and how to maximize the use and effectiveness of the system(s). Experts in the fields of nutrition, nutrition communication, nutrition labeling, biostatistics, dietary assessment/Dietary Reference Intakes, and consumer education and research (includingmethodology)are needed for the committee. We would be most grateful if you could, provide the names of any persons you think we should consider for this important task tofront-of-pack at nas.edu by October 5, 2009. Suggestions are sought in all sectors of the scientific and technical community. Your assistance in identifying potential committee members especially from under-represented minorities is greatly appreciated. You do not need to contact the individuals you nominate. Message-ID: <4AC9BBD3.35D2.0040.0@DHS.STATE.OR.US> REDESIGNING THE FUTURE Author Details New Book at Powell*s Bookstore October 5, 2009 Washington, DC(September 2009) * More than ever Americans are concerned about chemicals and their health. The stories are unnerving: Our children nurse on bottles and play with toys that leach unsafe chemicals. The containers and pans in our kitchens have been linked to infertility and obesity. We cover our skin in makeup and sunscreen carrying toxins. Nearly every child born today carries toxins in their blood. We breathe air that fundamentally alters our DNA. With Chasing Molecules: Poisonous Products, Human Health, and the Promise of Green Chemistry, investigative journalist Elizabeth Grossman details the *friendly fire* of our own creations and lifestyle. For the sake of convenience and economy we have added dangerous chemicals to millions of products we use every day. Thousands of these chemicals have never been tested for their safety even though they are all around us*in our homes, schools, food and neighborhoods*and in our bodies. The consequences range from diabetes to cancer and reproductive and neurological disorders. What if we had the power to stop using these chemicals? What if instead of warning people that a chemical is harmful and even deadly, we didn*t use it? That is the promise of green chemistry*a world where the pollutants stay out of products and out of people. With this new idea, an engineering revolution is brewing, and its rallying call is *benign by design.* Leading engineers are creating new, non-toxic alternatives that work with natural systems instead of disrupting them. With Chasing Molecules, Grossman explores the start up world of green chemistry and its potential to transform manufacturing with unprecedented benefits to the corporate bottom line and our health. To submit an abstract for consideration, please visit www.cme.hsc.usf.edu/smph. Milestones in Social Marketing: Past, Present, and Future USF Health's Social Marketing in Public Health Conference & Training Academy will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary on June 11-14, 2010, featuring special plenary session speaker Philip Kotler, PhD. The University and our partner, the Academy for Educational Development, are excited for the opportunity to reflect on the past 20 years and appreciative of the countless people who have contributed to the sustenance and nurturing of the conference. We anticipate that the 2010 conference will provide participants with a unique and memorable experience. The conference is designed for social marketers, public health professionals, health educators, and program administrators who plan programs for a variety of settings, such as the CDC, state/local health departments, public health agencies, and non-profit organizations, among others. Sessions are offered for researchers, practitioners, and students. The conference planning committee invites abstract submissions to be considered for oral presentations and posters. The content should demonstrate the application of social marketing strategies to behavior change, service marketing, or improvement of public health practice. Abstracts may describe social marketing programs, innovative research methods, and theoretical advances. Conference reviewers favor abstracts that clearly illustrate key elements of the social marketing approach (e.g., how formative research is used to make marketing decisions; description of audience segmentation methods and results; evaluations of comprehensive marketing programs). Projects should be completed, not "in process." Of particular interest are applications of social marketing strategies that address the health objectives for the nation, promote social marketing within one's own agency, demonstrate the sustainability and/or self-sufficiency of social marketing programs, or use innovative methods to understand consumer needs and wants. Other suggested topics include, but are not limited to: the use of social marketing to ameliorate health problems and issues of special populations; evaluation of social marketing programs and strategies; social marketing approaches to defining health problems; examining solutions to health problems; and changing health practices in school and community settings, and training and education in social marketing. Abstracts that focus exclusively on health communications activities are not viewed as favorably as those that address all four Ps in the marketing mix. Abstracts will be accepted only in electronic format via the Social Marketing Quarterly web portal until January 18, 2010. To submit an abstract for consideration, please visit www.cme.hsc.usf.edu/smph. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... To prevent our children from being bombarded by unhealthy food marketing--whether it's a television commercial, an internet advertisement, or food placement at the supermarket--we must ensure our children are exposed, and have access to, healthy eating options. This session will explore what groups are most heavily targeted by marketers and what public health advocates can do to take the remote out of the marketer's hands and ultimately change the channel. SOCIALMARKETING FIELD SCHOOL JANUARY 4-8, 2010 University of South Florida College of Public Health Courses Offered: Introduction to Social Marketing, Focus Group Research Strategies, and Designing Social Marketing Programs Please visit www.cme.hsc.usf.edu/fsjan for full information and registration. Introduction to Social Marketing Nancy Lee, MBA This course is designed to give students a thorough orientation to the discipline of social marketing and specific applications in public health as well as environmental protection. It is appropriate for current and future practitioners in the public health field and other public sector disciplines. Class sessions will combine didactic presentations with group discussions and in-class exercises. Focus Group Research Strategies Richard Krueger, PhD This course is an intensive overview of focus group procedures in the public and non-profit environment. Attention will be placed on question development, moderator skills, analysis strategies and planning critical logistical details of focus group interviews, and analyzing results of focus group interviews. The course will examine unique methodological characteristics of focus group interviews, identify emerging trends, and explore areas of appropriate and inappropriate use. Designing Social Marketing Programs R. Craig Lefebvre, PhD Participants in this course will learn how to use social marketing to design public health and social change programs. The course will use a people-centered approach that relies on insight and empathy as much as on data for program development. We will explore learning and behavior change in a social context as much as in an individual one. The course will emphasize the context of the everyday lives of people, the competition for *space* in their lives, and the 4P's marketing framework as a tool to address public health problems. We will adapt design thinking methodologies to complement the marketing planning process and learn to engage people to develop programs that are more effective, efficient, equitable and sustainable than existing solutions. PRE-REQUISITE: Introduction to Social Marketing. Please visit www.cme.hsc.usf.edu/fsjan for full information and registration. **Courses, such as those listed above, fulfill the requirements of the Social Marketing in Public Health Graduate Certificate; additional information can be found at http://www.outreach.usf.edu/gradcerts/certinfo.asp?ccode=XSP.* -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We would like to inform you - our key partners and stakeholders - about an exciting new project to be launched in January 2010. We thank you for your contributions over the years and hope you will consider joining us as we create a statewide Health Improvement Plan to promote population health. Opportunities to be a part of this process are listed below. What - The Oregon Health Authority (OHA), a new state agency created by the 2009 Oregon state legislature, will lead a process to create a statewide Health Improvement Plan. Divisions of the Department of Human Services that provide health services to Oregonians including the Oregon Public Health Division, the Mental Health and Addictions Division, and the Division of Medical Assistance Programs are a part of the OHA. The Public Employees Benefits Board (PEBB) is also included. The statewide Health Improvement Plan will address priorities of the OHA including improving population health and reducing health care costs. For more information about the OHA and its citizen-led Board, go to www.oregon.gov/oha. The Oregon Health Improvement Plan will replace the current risk factor and chronic disease specific statewide plans (e.g. tobacco, physical activity and nutrition, arthritis, asthma, cancer, diabetes and heart disease and stroke). It will determine objectives and strategies that are known to work to prevent obesity and tobacco use and to detect and manage chronic diseases. These objectives and strategies include statewide and community-based policy, systems and environmental approaches, as well as addressing underlying conditions and social determinants of health. How you can be involved 1. Respond to a Call for Nominations for the Oregon Health Improvement Plan Committee. Please go to www.oregon.gov/oha and click on Oregon Health Improvement Plan Committee for the Committee Interest Form and Committee Information. Committee Interest Forms are due Wednesday, January 6th. 2. Participate in a task force to create content for the plan (to be convened in early 2010) 3. Participate in a planning committee for a Nov. 2010 statewide conference to launch the plan (to be convened in early 2010) 4. Provide input and feedback a statewide stakeholder meetings (Spring and Fall 2010) To join the Oregon Health Improvement Plan Interest Group Listserv to receive updates about the planning process, please click on http://listsmart.osl.state.or.us/mailman/listinfo/or_health_improvement_plan.
