Please excuse any cross postings that you receive with this health promotion and chronic disease update.

We would like to inform you - our key partners and stakeholders - about an exciting new project to be launched in January 2010. We thank you for your contributions over the years and hope you will consider joining us as we create a statewide Health Improvement Plan to promote population health. Opportunities to be a part of this process are listed below.

What - The Oregon Health Authority (OHA), a new state agency created by the 2009 Oregon state legislature, will lead a process to create a statewide Health Improvement Plan. Divisions of the Department of Human Services that provide health services to Oregonians including the Oregon Public Health Division, the Mental Health and Addictions Division, and the Division of Medical Assistance Programs are a part of the OHA. The Public Employees Benefits Board (PEBB) is also included. The statewide Health Improvement Plan will address priorities of the OHA including improving population health and reducing health care costs. For more information about the OHA and its citizen-led Board, go to www.oregon.gov/oha.

The Oregon Health Improvement Plan will replace the current risk factor and chronic disease specific statewide plans (e.g. tobacco, physical activity and nutrition, arthritis, asthma, cancer, diabetes and heart disease and stroke). It will determine objectives and strategies that are known to work to prevent obesity and tobacco use and to detect and manage chronic diseases. These objectives and strategies include statewide and community-based policy, systems and environmental approaches, as well as addressing underlying conditions and social determinants of health.

How you can be involved
1. Respond to a Call for Nominations for the Oregon Health Improvement Plan Committee. Please go to www.oregon.gov/oha and click on Oregon Health Improvement Plan Committee for the Committee Interest Form and Committee Information. Committee Interest Forms are due Wednesday, January 6th.
2. Participate in a task force to create content for the plan (to be convened in early 2010)
3. Participate in a planning committee for a Nov. 2010 statewide conference to launch the plan (to be convened in early 2010)
4. Provide input and feedback a statewide stakeholder meetings (Spring and Fall 2010)
