National Women's Health Week on May 9-15, 2010 We will celebrate the 11th Annual National Women's Health Week on May 9-15, 2010. National Women's Health Week is a week long health observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health (OWH). National Women's Health Week empowers women to make their health a top priority. With the theme "It's Your Time," the nationwide initiative encourages women to take simple steps for a longer, healthier, and happier life. During National Women's Health Week, communities, businesses, government, health organizations, and other groups work together to educate women about steps they can take to improve their physical and mental health and lower their risks of certain diseases. There are many ways to get involved. As a provider, you could provide or make appointments to provide preventive health services to women on during the week of May 9th through May 15th. Services could include blood pressure checks, pap tests, mammograms, diabetes tests, HIV/AIDS tests, and other health screenings. Or, you may choose to host an event during the week. Another option would be to promote the WOMAN Challenge-an online physical activity program that kicks off on Mother's Day, May 9, 2010. To help get you started, a variety of materials for planning activities are now posted on the National Women's Health Week website: http://www.womenshealth.gov/whw/. Organizations that register their events on the National Women's Health Week website (http://www.womenshealth.gov/whw/my-account/sign-in.cfm) will be able order free promotional materials while supplies last. Should you have any questions about National Women's Health Week and how to participate, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for actively promoting the health of women in our region. Your commitment to improving the health of American women contributes to our success each year. Emilee I. Health takes many forms, and public health serves many functions. The environment in which you live, work, and play affects your health. Public health is the practice of preventing disease and promoting good health within groups of people, from small communities to entire countries. With this photo contest, we are interested in different ways to show public health and healthy (or unhealthy) communities. Awards will be presented on Tuesday, 4/6. Cash awards go to the top 3 winners of the photo contest. The event will take place at the Hollywood Theater in NE Portland. Winners will be announced at around 6:30, followed by a screening of the film "Straightlaced: How gender's got us all tied up." President Obama is expected to sign the bill in the coming days. Because of our efforts, the passage of the bill is a huge victory for pubic health! Not only will the bill extend health insurance coverage to an additional 32 million uninsured Americans, provide subsidies to help individuals purchase health insurance, prevent insurance companies from discriminating against individuals with pre-existing conditions and strengthen the Medicare program, it will also provide billions of dollars of funding for public health and prevention when it is fully implemented. In fact, the new Prevention and Public Health Fund created in the bill will provide $500 million for prevention, wellness and public health activities beginning in 2010. The House also passed a reconciliation bill which contains a number or improvements to the Senate bill. That measure now moves to the Senate for action - we'll be in touch with you about urging your Senators to support that measure in the coming days. Thank you again for you role in making this historic vote a reality!
