Learn how you can plug into redevelopment projects to get healthier food options into the plan. Cosponsored by the Community Food Security Coalition and the Healthy Corner Stores Network Register now Opening Up the Schoolyard April 28 In many communities, the safest and most convenient places for children to play are school facilities like gyms, sports fields, and playgrounds - but districts often close their property to the public after hours, concerned about liability, security, and maintenance. We'll take you through the nuts and bolts of how to create contracts that expand access to school grounds with schools, local government, and even nonprofits sharing the costs and responsibilities. Register now Junk Food Marketing to Kids: Can We Stop It? May 26 The food industry spends over $1 billion each year marketing fast food, sugary cereal, and other "junk" foods to children. We'll look at new strategies that policymakers and advocates across the country have begun exploring to limit food marketing in schools, neighborhoods, and on TV and the internet. We'll look at how various ways of influencing the price of unhealthy products have worked for tobacco control and whether they could help combat obesity - and we'll explore some nontraditional pricing strategies to make healthy foods more affordable. Register now Healthier Corner Stores: Finding the Funding July 28 Advocates can tap into a range of programs through federal, state, and local agencies to help make corner stores a source of fresh, healthy food instead of just liquor and cigarettes. You'll learn how to identify and leverage government tools and financing mechanisms to create healthier convenience stores. Cosponsored by the Community Food Security Coalition and the Healthy Corner Stores Network Register now Walkable Streets and the Law September 22 As local governments start planning more pedestrian-friendly communities, legal questions may emerge, especially around liability issues. We'll provide an overview of what makes a community walkable and how to consider the liability risks, and we'll walk you through new tools to make pedestrian-friendly streets the default in your community. Register now New Partnerships for Healthier Corner Stores November 17 Nutrition assistance programs like WIC and SNAP not only help low-income families afford healthy meals, they're also an economic boon for participating retailers. We'll talk about how advocates can work effectively with store owners to maximize the benefits of nutrition assistance programs for consumers and retailers alike. Click here RWJF Healthy Eating Research 2011 Call for Proposals Now Open Healthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood Obesity Application Deadline: Multiple Healthy Eating Research is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The program supports research on environmental and policy strategies with strong potential to promote healthy eating among children to prevent childhood obesity, especially among lower-income and racial and ethnic populations at highest risk for obesity. Findings are expected to advance RWJF's efforts to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by 2015. This round of funding supports strategic, rigorous, policy-relevant research on a wide range of policy and environmental changes. Target populations include children and adolescents ages 3 to 18 and their families. The Foundation places special emphasis on reaching the children at greatest risk for obesity: Black, Latino, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander children, and children who live in lower-income communities. This call for proposals (CFP) is for three types of awards aimed at providing key decision- and policy-makers with evidence to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic. The three award types are: Round 6 grants; Rapid-response grants; and RWJF New Connections grants awarded through the Healthy Eating Research program. Approximately $2.35 million will be awarded under this CFP for the three award types. To learn more about this funding opportunity, to register for a Web conference and to apply for a grant, please visit the Healthy Eating Research program Web site at www.healthyeatingresearch.org. Best Buy for Your Education Dollars These days, we all need to look at where we can best spend our money. This is particularly true for nonprofit organizations. However, when you consider that only slightly more than one in 10 American adults are considered proficient in the health literacy skills they need to effectively navigate and use our healthcare system, you can see that the Health Literacy Conference is an excellent buy. If you make even a small number of incremental changes in how you and your staff interact and communicate with your patients and clients, the results could more than pay for your small investment. We have kept our tuition rates at the same low rate every year. See our rates grid to know how little you will pay to attend this important conference. And remember, your tuition includes: Breakfast on Thursday and Friday Lunch on Thursday and Friday Opening Night Reception Tuesday night trip to visit IHA's low literacy-friendly clinic ($30) FREE Wednesday nationwide virtual event to help you create a health literacy action plan for your organization FREE Preconference Session on Wednesday evening: "Health Literacy 101: An Introduction to the Field" Continuing Education credits Complimentary tote bag with info and gifts Multiple networking opportunities Poster session on Thursday evening ..and more! Geri-Ann Galanti: The Intersection of Culture and Health Literacy In this email, we focus on Geri-Ann Galanti, PhD. She earned her doctorate in medical anthropology and is one of the leading experts on cultural anthropology. Much of her work involves helping healthcare providers become more culturally aware. Geri-Ann is a big believer that health literacy involves more than just understanding a patient's language. "Beliefs about health and illness, time orientation, and cultural values play an important role in health literacy. A culturally competent healthcare provider can help improve understanding." Don't miss Dr. Galanti's session on "Communicating Across Cultures: Issues and Solutions," scheduled for Friday, May 6 at the conference. Your Conference Hotel--Hyatt Regency Irvine The Tenth Annual IHA Health Literacy Conference will be held once again at the Hyatt Regency Irvine, close to John Wayne/Orange County Airport (SNA) with complimentary airport shuttle, and just minutes from world-class shopping at South Coast Plaza. Easy access to the beach and freeway, close to Disneyland Park, California Adventure, the Downtown Disney District, Knott's Berry Farm, The Block at Orange, Crystal Cathedral, and Anaheim Stadium. We have negotiated a limited number of rooms at a special rate of $119 at the Hyatt Regency Irvine. Be sure to mention that you are attending the IHA Health Literacy Conference to get this special rate. Book your room early, as the block of rooms at this special rate is limited. March 6: Steps to Mindful Eating: Making Peace with Eating, Body, and Weight Presenter: Donald Altman, M.A., LPC In this economy what's a smart move? Invest! President Obama talked in his State of the Union address about "investments" in our future. No matter what your opinion is on our government making investments in these tight times, economists agree on a rational way for individuals to make financial decisions. We are tempted to save money, keeping our spending to a minimum, and yet we know we need to spend to advance our skills and promote our services. Smart people do both. It's wise to minimize frivolous spending and maximize investments in things that will pay off with increased income in the next few months and years. I hear over and over again how it pays off for those who attend my Counseling Intensive or use my other CPE programs to advance their counseling skills. They tell me their investment is returned many times over! Here's an example... "I HIGHLY recommend Molly Kellogg's tapes and tips - I wish I had heard her tapes before I really got my practice up and running - listening to her tapes has helped me earn more money and to be more effective in how I counsel my clients!" Carol Ann Brannon, MS, RD, LD One dietitian who works in a cardiac outpatient clinic found her client return rate go up 50% in the first month after she attended the workshop. Dietitians are returning to take my workshop for a second time telling me it transformed their practice. This is a great time to invest in growing your skills and your business by following sage advice to ACT rather than RE-ACT. Click here to choose the investment that fits you. Tweet, Tweet I've started experimenting with Twitter. Want to play along? A few times a week I send out reminders of a skill or wording to practice. Some tweets ask you to notice if you are falling into one of the counseling traps. One follower suggested I share inspiring quotes, so I'm doing that too. Check out recent tweets and Sign up now. The study, which is the first to indicate that laughter may help prevent heart disease, found that people with heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in a variety of situations compared to people of the same age without heart disease. Read More Below University of Maryland Medical Center First Steps Through The Inner Barriers To Lifestyle Improvement Your client is motivated to be healthy and well, they are ready for being active, and, perhaps, with your help, they have wellness plan lined out. So, what is getting in their way of taking action and living that healthy lifestyle they desire? Chances are they have encountered some external barriers like schedule changes, lack of support from folks they counted on at home or at work, increased workload, etc. While we can work with them to strategize ways over, under, around and through those, the more insidious barriers can be internal in nature. What holds us back from succeeding at lasting lifestyle change is often as much an internal challenge as it can be external factors. (See my blogg)http://realbalancewellness.wordpress.com/2 011/01/06/ten-wa ys-to-coach-through-barriers-to-change---part-one---outer-barriers-to-lifestyle-improvement-by-dr-michael-arloski Our own beliefs about ourselves, and the world around us, as well as issues of self-esteem, self-doubt, and self-efficacy, may determine our progress and success. We can all be our own worst enemy without even knowing it. When it comes to being successful at losing weight, managing our stress, quitting smoking, etc., your client can start with two questions for themselves: "Can I really affect my own health?" and "Am I worth it?" Psychologist Wayne Dyer is fond of saying "You'll see it when you believe it" and this is a matter of belief. Does your client believe that the efforts to improve their lifestyle are going to make any difference in their health (self-efficacy)? Is the effort worth it, and am I worth the effort? The two questions go hand in hand. People who are successful at lifestyle improvement are able to answer "Yes!" to these questions. A "No" or even a "Maybe" defines where the work begins. There are libraries full of evidence that our lifestyle choices do indeed affect our health both in terms of prevention and in terms of the course of an illness. Yet, as we know belief is not a simple matter of logic and facts. How "Okay" I feel about myself may have some very deep roots and unearthing them may not be as necessary as you might think. Helping your client build confidence in themselves and their wellness efforts starts with selecting goals that are the easiest to attain and letting success build on success. They can increase their probability of succeeding by working with an ally (like you) instead of attempting it alone. They will also, of course, be more successful with an actual plan instead of just launching a single action step effort. Encourage them to seek out experiences that allow them to engage in creative self-expression, another known booster of self-esteem. Build it in to their wellness plan. Tied to building self-esteem and self-efficacy is being vigilant about keeping self-doubt and excessive self-criticism at bay. It seems that many times the little negative voice begins to whisper in our ear whenever change is attempted. Let your client know this is natural and help them to combat the Gremlin with positive affirmation or messages. (We'll tackle that "gremlin" in a later column) Urge your client to look inside for the answers. They've got them. In 1971 Ram Dass (psychiatrist turned meditation teacher/guru) admonished us all to BE HERE NOW!, and the battle with the distraction capacity of our big brains has never let up. How many wonderful books, mindfulnes s practices, institutes, and even religions have arisen in our quest to focus on this very moment in front of us. Today a new and wonderful effort is underway with such great books as The Power of Full Engagement by Tony Schwartz and Jim Loehr. In this short video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybfPNevrF00). Loehr nails "the real culprit", not stress, but "insufficient volume of recovery". He argues that we need to give people more permission to increase the frequency and intensity of their time spent in what he's referring to as "recovery". Balance. More Details: In October 2010, the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities was awarded a three-year grant from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (grant # UA6MC19803) to develop a Maternal and Child Health Life Course Research Network (MCH LCRN). This exciting new project represents a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of how health develops over the life course by providing researchers, practitioners, policymakers and consumers with a mechanism for interacting, sharing information and tools, and engaging in collaborative and innovative projects, including the development of an MCH life course research agenda and a set of related publications. The inaugural webinar in the series - entitled Developmental Health and the Life Course - took place on Thursday, February 10th, and featured Clyde Hertzman from the Human Early Learning Partnership and the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia. The first webinar is available online at the following link: https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/614159574. Please note that you will be asked to register with your email address prior to accessing the archive. The second webinar in the series will take place on Thursday, March 17th from 11am-noon PT / 2-3pm ET. This webinar will feature Matthew Gillman, MD, SM from the Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School/Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, where he is director of the Obesity Prevention Program. Dr. Gillman will describe the challenges and opportunities of research designed to address the developmental origins of health and disease. (March 30, 2011) * Today*s release of the 2011County Health Rankings*the second annual set of reports to rank the overall health of counties in all 50 states*by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provides U.S. counties with a useful tool for stimulating health improvement nationwide. TheRankingshighlight the need for people and organizations from all sectors of each county*public, private, educational, non-profit, media or philanthropic*to work deliberately and collaboratively to improve the public*s health through policies, programs, and services. *The nation*s local health departments are on the front lines of protecting the public*s health. Unfortunately, no single agency can address all of the health issues that people in our communities face today,* said Robert M. Pestronk, executive director of the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). *TheCounty Health Rankingsare, and will continue to be, an excellent way for local health departments to engage a wider spectrum of community partners to improve the public*s health in their jurisdictions. Regardless of its overall ranking, local health departments and community partners in every community can use theRankingsto identify priority areas for improvement and work together to solve them; whether they are health behaviors, like smoking and obesity, or health equity factors, like poverty and unemployment.* NACCHO commends the release of the 50 state reports, which rank counties within each state on how healthy people are and how long they live. Counties are also are ranked on key factors that affect health such as: smoking, obesity, binge drinking, access to primary care providers, rates of high school graduation, rates of violent crime, air pollution levels, unemployment rates, number of children living in poverty and access to healthy foods. TheRankings, available atwww.countyhealthrankings.org ( http://www.countyhealthrankings.org/ ), includes a snapshot of each county, and a color-coded map to allow users to compare each county*s overall health ranking within its state. About the National Association of County and City Health Officials The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) represents the nation's 2,800 local governmental health departments. These city, county, metropolitan, district and tribal departments work every day to protect and promote health and well-being for all people in their communities.
