We need places that we can be with people we care about- our family, our friends, our community. Because community doesn?t happen by accident, there has to be a place for it to happen? - Richard Jackson, Designing Health Communities, Rebuilding Place of the Heart To celebrate Public Health Week, the PCC Health and Wellness Department at the Rock Creek campus and the Oregon Public Health Association (OPHA) Present: Designing Healthy Communities Date: Wednesday, April 4th, 2012 Time: 12:00pm ? 1:00pm Location: Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus Building 9, Event Center, 122A 17705 NW Springville Rd. Portland, OR 97229 Description: The PCC Health and Wellness Department will be screening a clip of the Designing Health Communities episode, Rebuilding Places of the Heart. Designing Healthy Communities looks at the impact our built environment has on key public health indices ? obesity, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, cancer and depression. It is hosted and narrated by Richard Jackson, MD, MPH, of UCLA, formerly of the CDC. Dr. Jackson connects bad community design with burgeoning health costs, then analyzes and illustrates what citizens are doing about this urgent crisis by looking upstream for innovative solutions. In the episode, Rebuilding Places of the Heart viewers will learn about how cities like Elgin, IL, Riverside, CA and Syracuse, NY are redefining themselves for a new paradigm. Leading the way to a greener, more sustainable Elgin is a group of high school students. Despite many innovative programs to get Syracuse back on its feet, the city struggles with the larger problem of Lake Onondaga, the most polluted lake in our nation. Local Native American Onondaga tribal leader, Oren Lyons, serves as conscience in the movement to restore Lake Onondaga for ?Seven Generations to come.? And in Riverside, CA, 16-year old science prodigy, Otana Jakpor, has a personal reason for her war against air pollution. She takes her battle all the way to the White House. This event is free and open to everyone. The MCH Navigator is a learning portal that links individuals to existing open-access training, organized in areas consistent with nationally endorsed public health and MCH leadership competencies. Online training resources - like archived webcasts and webinars, instructional modules and self-guided short courses - have undergone academic review and have been handpicked for, and vetted by, MCH audiences. This website is being made widely available now, while still in development, in response to requests from our state and local stakeholder collaborators. In addition to meeting what have been described as urgent needs in the field, the release of this early product will enable input and feedback from the widest array of target audiences. Introduction to Popular Education Hosted by the OPHA Health Promotion and Education Section Presented by the Community Capacitation Center Popular education is a highly effective strategy for building knowledge and skills, developing leadership, and organizing for social justice. Most closely associated with the adult literacy work of Brazilian Paulo Freire, popular education is used around the world in many fields. It is applicable to all areas of educational practice. Popular education is based on the idea that, no matter our occupation and level of formal education, we all know a great deal as a result of our life experience. Therefore educators should start with what people already know and build on it. In this workshop, you will become familiar with: ? The underlying philosophy of popular education and key popular education methods, such as brainstorming, sociodramas (social skits), cooperative learning, role plays, and din?micas (educational games) ? How to move through the cycle of praxis (from action to reflection to action) in the course of a class ? How participants can apply what they are learning to their day-to-day work ? How this method can be used to teach any subject ? The history of popular education and how it grew out of the lived experience of people working for social change. *Registration: Space is limited and participants will be registered on a first-come, first served basis. We have received positive feedback from several attendees and we are excited about the potential collaborations and projects that may develop from using Oregon DMV records to calculate body mass index. We sincerely apologize to folks who were not able to join us remotely due to our capacity limitations. Please use this link to access the recording: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/354700234 Obesity in Oregon: Findings from driver?s license records Abstract: Obesity is one of public health?s top priorities. A growing body of evidence links community design and environmental factors with obesity. To support obesity studies and inform prevention efforts, Oregon Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) is publishing weight status data calculated from driver?s license and identification cards issued by Driver and Motor Vehicles Services (DMV). With over 3.5 million records containing address information, this rich data source can provide precise weight estimates for areas as small as census block groups. Please join Oregon EPHT we examine DMV records as a resource for tracking the weight of the population and present maps that will soon be accessible on the EPHT Data Portal. Dear Colleagues: We are pleased to share information announced today by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) about the availability of approximately $32 million to improve the health of Americans through two Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) initiatives. These funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) are designed to support comprehensive programs that address health disparities in racial and ethnic groups. These two FOAs build upon previous REACH efforts and other community health programs that focus on engaging community partners to reduce health disparities. REACH * Building on past accomplishments, the REACH FOA (approximately $20 million) will fund approximately six to ten organizations to implement sustainable practice- and evidence-based strategies impacting health disparities. Applicants should be able to demonstrate national or multi-state reach through local partnerships or program activities. At least 75 percent of the funds awarded through this FOA will be disseminated to local partners. Awardees may choose to implement strategies that address disparities in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, breast and cervical cancer, infant mortality, asthma, or child and adult immunization. o The FOA, titled PPHF 2012: REACH: Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health financed solely by 2012 Prevention and Public Health Funds, may be found at www.Grants.gov by searching for funding opportunity number CDC-RFA-DP12-1209PPHF12 or by accessing (http://www.grants.gov/search/search.do;jsessionid=Q2s4PjlLlJLpxY65TL0mG6P0nc0QGG82YnGSccnHwBNYvLcdVVN3!477727685?oppId=178673&mode=VIEW). To submit questions and access frequently asked questions visit http://www.cdc.gov/reach/foa/index.htm. REACH Demonstration Project * The REACH Demonstration Project (approximately $12 million) addresses obesity and hypertension prevention strategies, which are two of the leading risk factors for chronic diseases. Obesity and hypertension result in a high disease burden within racial and ethnic minority populations. This FOA will fund two to four awardees for a period of three years to develop and implement strategies that reduce obesity and hypertension in populations experiencing health disparities. Evaluation and dissemination activities will be emphasized. o The FOA, titled PPHF 2012: REACH: Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health: Obesity and Hypertension Demonstration Projects financed solely by 2012 Prevention and Public Health Funds, may be found at www.Grants.gov by searching for funding opportunity number CDC-RFA-DP12-1217PPHF12 or by accessing (http://www.grants.gov/search/search.do;jsessionid=Q2s4PjlLlJLpxY65TL0mG6P0nc0QGG82YnGSccnHwBNYvLcdVVN3!477727685?oppId=178674&mode=VIEW). To submit questions and access frequently asked questions visit http://www.cdc.gov/reach/demoproject/index.htm. Proposals for both REACH initiatives should focus on strategies that reduce or eliminate health disparities in one or more of the following racial and ethnic groups, including but not limited to: African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian American, and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. Both FOAs support the efforts of Million Hearts(tm), a national initiative to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2016, by working to prevent heart disease and stroke within populations experiencing disproportionate burden of disease. Please note that letters of intent are required for these FOAs. The letter of intent deadline for both FOAs is July 11, 2012 at 5:00 pm EDT and the application deadline for both FOAs is August 7, 2012, 11:59 pm EDT.
