Recently, SOPHE successfully petitioned ADA to include CHES and MCHES in the ADA Guidelines for Diabetes Self-Management and Treatment. These guidelines are used by health insurers to determine third-party reimbursement for services. > > In 2013, NCBDE approved SOPHE's request to allow MCHES to be eligible to qualify for the exam to become a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE?). Beginning January 1, 2014, professionals with an MCHES credential will be eligible to submit an application to become a CDE?. > > NCHEC appreciates and applauds SOPHE commitment and dedication to advance the health education profession. > > To read SOPHE's full press release visit their Website at http://www.sophe.org/MCHES_Diabetes_Educator.cfm > > Supporting information > ? Health Education Specialists are now specifically included in the diabetes self-management and treatment guidelines - whereas before they were not acknowledged and therefore not included. If your organization is not yet an ADA recognized provider, you may be very interested in viewing this webinar that SOPHE sponsored - available in SOPHE's Center for Online Resources & Education - http://www.sophe.org/education.cfm > How to Get your Diabetes Self-Management Program Recognized by the ADA_01-255DL > ? The National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) has a lengthy history since the mid-1990s of excluding CHES to sit for the CDE exam. SOPHE did an extensive crosswalk showing how the advanced competencies are aligned with their roles/responsibilities of Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE?). With that, SOPHE petitioned to NCBDE to at least allow MCHES to be eligible to sit for the exam. This is a major success and a foot in the door for future opportunities. > > Also, SOPHE released a document Affordable Care Act: Opporutunities and Challenges for Health Education Specialists. PROCEED Down the Yellow Brick Road: Using the model for optimal program planning, implementation and evaluation Dr. Larry Green, the ?Oz? of Health Education, is coming to the Emerald City. The Precede-Proceed model is a framework that helps health program planners, policy makers and educators analyze the situation and design health programs efficiently. This established, multidimensional model involves an ?educational diagnosis? and an ?ecological diagnosis? and is founded in the social/behavioral sciences, epidemiology and education. Dr. Green will identify features of the model that are designed to assure a good match between the program plan and the context of the populations for whom it is designed, as well as some of the implementation problems of the evidence-based practice movement that would be addressed by the model. On April 23, we lost a true leader. Dr. Antronette (Toni) Yancey died at the age of 55, following a year-long battle with lung cancer. Toni had a larger-than-life personality and made incredible contributions to public health. She worked tirelessly to change norms around physical activity by encouraging workplaces and schools to make brief activity breaks a routine part of the day. Toni was the founder of "Instant Recess(r)" -- a "MOVEment of ACTIVE-ists dedicated to making America healthier 10 minutes at a time." Read more about Toni's life and legacy in the LA Times, and discover more on the Instant Recess website. Prevention Institute, along with CWA and many other partners, will honor Toni's memory by doing exactly what Toni would have wanted us to do - GET UP AND MOVE! We invite all WIC agencies and friends of WIC to gather your co-workers on Tuesday, May 7 at 1 pm PDT (4 pm EDT) for a 10-minute instant recess. It's easy -- and fun! Click here and Toni and the Los Angeles Sparks will lead you and your colleagues through a brief activity break. Don't forget to take a picture or quick video and share it with us on Facebook or Twitter! We'll retweet and share so everyone can see #InstantRecess celebrated across the country. Toni sent an email to colleagues earlier this year which said: "No matter how great your idea is, you're just a lone nut until someone follows you & transforms you into a leader. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for following me to start the real momentum behind Instant Recess. Now if every one of us shares this idea with others, we'll have a real MOVEment on our hands! (NCHEC) and the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) applaud passage of Hawaii State Resolution HCR 161/SD 1 as a first step in determining whether health education specialists should be regulated and licensed in the state of Hawaii. Sponsored by Hawaii State Representative Ryan Yamane (D, House District 37) and Hawaii State Senator Jill Tokuda (D, Senate District 24), Senate Majority Whip, the legislation calls for forming a working group to determine the scope and specific duties of the health educator profession. The group's report will be provided to the Hawaii Legislature and Hawaii State Auditor as a basis for determining professional licensure in the state. Health educators, often referred to as health education specialists, have formal training and education to work with individuals, groups and communities to promote their health and safety or recover from illness. "Health education specialists play a vital role in educating patients and consumers about their health and promoting organizational policies that support healthy behaviors," says Elaine Auld, MPH, MCHES, Chief Executive Officer of SOPHE. "Given new opportunities with the Affordable Care Act, Hawaii has taken laudable steps to optimize opportunities for wellness and protect the public from incompetent practice." Resolution HCR/161 SD 1 calls for convening experts who are familiar with the background, credentials, and education requirements of health educators and who are able to provide information about their duties for licensure in the state. The working group will be comprised of various representatives from state government, academia, and health care institutions throughout Hawaii. Findings of the working group are expected to be provided to the Legislature before the Regular Session of 2014. "The inclusion of the nationally recognized CHES and MCHES certifications in licensure requirements will contribute to the health of the residents of Hawaii," says NCHEC Executive Director, Linda Lysoby, MS, MCHES, CAE. "Licensure of health education specialists will provide minimum standards, ensure qualified professionals deliver health education services, and recognize health education as a skilled profession." Chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, consume more than 75 percent of the $2.2 trillion spent on health care in the United States each year. Spending $10 per person on proven preventive interventions could save the country over $16 billion in just five years. This legislation will help ensure that patients, families and consumers are not harmed or put at risk by misinformation or advice on disease prevention or treatment. In addition to NCHEC and SOPHE, Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) Department of Health Sciences and the Coalition for National Health Education Organizations (CNHEO) were instrumental in providing testimony to support passage of the resolution. HPU's baccalaureate degree in health sciences includes courses in health promotion and wellness management, health education, epidemiology, health policy analysis, and a wide variety of other health-related subjects. Graduates work in health-related jobs in government agencies, community based organizations, schools, health care facilities, or worksites throughout the Hawaiian Islands. About NCHEC The mission of NCHEC is to enhance the professional practice of Health Education by promoting and sustaining a credentialed body of Health Education Specialists. To meet this mission, NCHEC certifies health education specialists, promotes professional development, and strengthens professional preparation and practice. Our charge is to develop and administer a national competency-based examination; develop standards for professional preparation; and promote professional development through continuing education for health education professionals. Currently, there are over 10,500 active Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) and Master Certified Health Education Specialists (MCHES) practicing health education nationally and internationally. Spring has officially sprung, which means, in addition to intermittent showers of rain and hail, the flowers are in riotous bloom, and the sun is making its appearance more regularly these days. Hurray! International No Diet Day (INDD) is Monday, May 6th. INDD is a day to celebrate the beauty and diversity of ALL our natural sizes and shapes. It is a day to affirm every body's right to self esteem, respect, and emotional and physical well-being. We encourage you to declare this day as a personal moratoriaum on diet/weight obsession. Learn the facts about weight loss, dieting, health and body size. Recognize how dieting perpetuates violence against women. Honor the victims of eating disorders and weight loss surgeries. Do something to help end weight discrimination, sizism and fat phobia. Share our video (see below) with family, friends and coworkers. And in the spirit of spring, we at Be Nourished would like to share with you our own verdant offering: our very first video, created in collaboration with Tom Frisch of Tom11Films. We are very pleased with the result! Check out our video and let us know what you think! Warm regards, Dana, Hilary and the staff at Be Nourished Body-Positive Medicine by Dr. Deanna McCrary, ND Isn't all medicine body positive? Sadly, not always. The medical community often over-emphasizes lower body weight as a goal to reach and maintain in order to "achieve" health. The idea that a person can achieve metabolic health while being at a weight outside of the accepted norms is often viewed as suspect at best and medical heresy at worst. But is there a way to achieve overall health without focusing on body weight? Fortunately, the old views are starting to change--slowly. More and more research is showing that traditional dieting does not work in the long-term and often leads directly to even more weight gain. Also, patients are more likely to engage in physical activity if it is something that they already do that feels fun and pleasurable, and can be part of their daily life. Further, recent studies have shown that excess body weight may actually have a protective health effect and prolong life rather than shorten it. "In study after study, overweight and moderately obese patients with certain chronic diseases often live longer and fare better than normal-weight patients with the same ailments. The accumulation of evidence is inspiring some experts to re-examine long-held assumptions about the association between body fat and disease," states Harriet Brown in a September 17, 2012 New York Times article titled "In 'Obesity Paradox,' Thinner May Mean Sicker." What Does "Body-Positive" mean? To define the phrase "body positive" I will paraphrase the principles of Health at Every Size(r) (HAES) as coined by the Association for Size Diversity and Health. HAES is a health-care movement that is synonymous with body positivity. To be body-positive one accepts and respects that there is natural diversity in body size and shape. Recognizing that health and well-being are multi-dimensional and include physical, social, spiritual, occupational, emotional, and intellectual aspects, a body positive person promotes all aspects of health and well-being for people of all sizes. A body-positive person eats in a manner which balances individual nutritional needs with hunger, satiety, appetite, and pleasure. They engage in individually appropriate, enjoyable, life-enhancing physical activity, rather than exercise focused on a goal of weight loss. To be body-positive does not mean that one has reached some blissful state of 100% body-acceptance or intuitive-eating nirvana without a shred of judgment toward oneself or others. It means we are on the road, reading about it, talking with others, putting some of these ideas into practice, and increasing our awareness. What traits do health care providers who embrace these tenets have in common? Here are a few: * Patients are treated equally * There are no weight-loss lectures * Patients are not weighed at each visit (generally) * BMI is not used to assess health * Offices accommodate and welcome all size * These providers have examined their own prejudices To read the full article, please visit our blog or Dr. McCrary's LifeJOY Natural Medicine website! $99 Special includes office visit & exams Laboratory fees for Pap tests are separate and start at $38 Women's Annual Exam with Dr. Deanna McCrary, ND Includes breast, pelvic and cervical health checks Offer Expires: June, 30, 2013 [Provider Training] Health at Every Size(r) in Clinical Practice A Training for Helping Professionals May 18 -19, 2013 We have a few spots left in our HAES training and we hope you'll consider joining us. A Poem: What My Body Has Taught Me By Margarita Tartakovsky, MS My body has taught me what feels good and what doesn't. When I need kindness and when I need rest. She's taught me to slow down, and to use all my senses to wander this world. She's taught me about patience, even though I'm used to running her to the ground or condemning her for supposed flaws. She's taught me forgiveness. She's taught me that I am resilient, even though I often forget that I am. My body has taught me the beauty of laughter, a piece of music, a balmy wind against my face and the soothing warmth of green tea with honey. She's let me release pentup powerful emotions, pen stories and create art that I am proud of. She's taught me how to listen and care for my needs, especially when sickness strikes like it has this week. She's taught me that I am a warrior, and that it's OK on the days I am not. My body has taught me to express love and to experience it. She's taught me that pain is fleeting, and to try again. She's taught me that I am a legacy, centuries of memories and heritage running through my veins. While I'll keep forgetting and re-learning these lessons, I am oh-so grateful for this body of mine for carrying me when all I wanted was to be anywhere else but in my own skin when I yearned to abandon and escape my body and did on many days. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Be Nourished is a collaboration between nutrition therapist Dana Sturtevant, counselor Hilary Kinavey, and other community partners who believe the capacity and potential to change is within every person. It is estimated that only 12% of patients fully comprehend health instructions and information. This leads to poorer health outcome and increased medication errors. While some sub-populations are at an elevated risk of low health literacy, it affects people from all socio-economic backgrounds. First Acknowledge, Validate and Empathize. Posted on May 20, 2013 by Michael Arloski [http://realbalancewellness.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/alonedocklake.jpg?w=640] What really reaches us is empathy. Effective coach training teaches about the power of relationship, of person-to-person connection, not just because it's warm and "nice", but because all the evidence from coaching and psychotherapy says it works! We each need to feel truly heard by others that we are attempting to be in relationship with. When we share our lives, our experiences and our feelings we truly want to have acceptance, acknowledgement, and validation. If I share that I have been in pain since an injury and it is breaking my heart that I can't get out and enjoy the physically active things I love to do, I don't want someone to consult with me about a solution ("Let's explore what you can do to exercise now."). I want someone to say "Wow! That must be so terribly difficult for you to be unable to exercise." I want them to "get it" that I'm not only in pain, but I'm frustrated, angry, stuck, depressed, and feeling loss. I want to HEAR that they "get it". [http://realbalancewellness.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/empathy-rogers.jpg?w=640] Once I feel like my experience is understood at that heart level, that my feelings have been affirmed, and it's been conveyed that it's okay for me to feel the way I feel, THEN I'll be happy to launch into some great strategic thinking about seeking solutions. When coaches convey what I love to call The Facilitative Conditions of Coaching (see my previous post: http://wp.me/pUi2y-6i) clients feel the validation, acceptance, acknowledgement that we're talking about. Coaches have to find the words to convey empathy, acknowledgement, unconditional positive regard, warmth and genuiness. But, they have to remember to do that FIRST, before they jump to solution seeking. Read More GLOBAL ADVANCES IN HEALTH AND MEDICINE Health Coaching:adding Value in Healthcare Reform During the last decade, debate about the nation's ailing healthcare system has moved to the forefront. In 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was signed into law. This groundbreaking piece of legislation impacts every aspect of the health industry, affecting everyone from doctors and health-care facilities to insurers and benefits consultants to business owners and patients. The ultimate goal of PACA is to decrease the number of uninsured Americans and reduce the overall costs of healthcare. Most experts agree that fundamental improvement in healthcare economics depends heavily on a three-part strategy: 1. Shifting from an economic model based on fee-for-service treatment of illness, with a natural bias toward doing more, to an outcomes model with compensation for improvement in health; 2. Reducing consumption of medical care by improving health; and 3. Increasing consumers' focus on and accountability for their health and healthcare costs. This focus has invigorated the health coaching industry. Employment opportunities for health coaches are growing exponentially as the provisions of healthcare reform are implemented. Link to the Global Advances in Health Medicine - Health Reform A Roundtable Discussion Health Coaching Education: A Conversation With Pioneers in the Field Interview by Suzanne Snyder In February 2013, Global Advances in Health and Medicine (GAHMJ) interviewed eight pioneers in the field of health coaching education (including Dr. Michael Arloski): This article features biographies of the participants and their perspectives on the evolution and value of health coaching education and the keys to its success. Read the Round Table Discussion Here! What does "Organic" and other Labels Mean? What do the food labels such as "organic," "natural," "free-range," and "non-GMO" really mean? Understanding this terminology is essential when you're shopping for healthy foods. Should all food be labeled? Currently in the US Genetically Engineered (GE) or modified Organisms (GMO) or foods are not required to be labeled. [USDA]The term "organic" refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. Specific requirements must be met and maintained in order for products to be labeled as "organic". Organic crops must be grown in safe soil, have no modifications, and must remain separate from conventional products. Farmers are not allowed to use synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers. Keep in mind that even if a producer is certified organic in the U.S., the use of the USDA Organic label is voluntary. At the same time, not everyone goes through the rigorous process of becoming certified, especially smaller farming operations. When shopping at a farmers' market, for example, don't hesitate to ask the vendors how their food was grown. Read more about labeling Food Labeling and GMO's[nonGMO] We make educated decisions in food buying based on the information we have. We count on honesty in food labeling in order to be educa ted consumers. Like humans, all organisms have genetic material. When scientists alter genetic material, or DNA, it's called genetic modification (GM). Genetically modifying foods or food crops can enhance taste and quality, increase nutrients or improve resistance to pests and disease. In some cases, GM foods help conserve natural resources, because the altered version might require less water or energy for processing. [GMO]Genetically engineered foods are different from other foods. Genetic engineering allows, for the first time, foreign genes, bacterial and viral vectors, viral promoters and antibiotic marker systems to be engineered into food. Genetically-modified plants, animals and processed foodstuffs were introduced to the international marketplace in the 1990s. These genetic "additions" are new to the human diet and should be subject to extensive safety testing. A significant percentage of processed foods purchased today contain some genetically engineered (GE) food products. As a result, each day, tens of millions of American infants, children and adults eat genetically engineered foods without their knowledge. Consumers have no way of knowing what foods are genetically engineered because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not require labeling of these products. What's worse, the agency also does not require any pre-market safety testing of GE foods. [labels] The five countries that regulate genetically modified organisms (GMOs)-Canada, USA, Mexico, Japan and the European Union (EU)-have all considered the appropriate role of labels in signaling these new production methods to consumers. Each of the five countries currently regulates the introduction of GMO products but only the EU requires labels that specify the presence of GMOs. Top 10 Genetically Modified Food 1.
