INVITATION
Health at Every Size Workshop
Hosted by the OPHA Health Education and Promotion Section
Despite findings that diets don’t work, health professionals are still promoting weight loss. New and exciting research is available on both the physiologic and psychological benefits of non-diet approaches. The evidence suggests that implementing health programming from the weight-neutral Health at Every Size (HAES) perspective may be more effective at promoting permanent dietary and physical activity behavior change than traditional approaches.
Dawn Clifford, PhD, RD and Michelle Neyman Morris, PhD, RD will highlight the benefits of non-diet approaches and the potentially negative health outcomes of weight-centered approaches. Participants will learn useful strategies and resources for implementing non-diet concepts into health promotion programming through engaging and interactive activities.
Following the presentation, participants will be able to:
Describe the differences between health programs that follow a weight-focused (diet) paradigm verses a weight-neutral (non-diet) paradigm.
Define common non-diet approach terms.
Describe five advantages of incorporating non-diet approaches into health programming.
Define weight bias and size discrimination and describe their negative effects on health.
Identify strategies and resources for developing evidence-based health interventions grounded in non-diet concepts such as intuitive eating, body acceptance, and enjoyable physical activity.
