> Health at Every Size Workshop®
> Hosted by the OPHA Health Education and Promotion Section
> Despite findings that diets don’t work, health professionals are still promoting weight loss. New and exciting research is available on both the physiologic and psychological benefits of non-diet approaches. The evidence suggests that implementing health programming from the weight-neutral Health at Every Size (HAES®) perspective may be more effective at promoting permanent dietary and physical activity behavior change than traditional approaches.
> Dawn Clifford, PhD, RD and Michelle Neyman Morris, PhD, RD will highlight the benefits of non-diet approaches and the potentially negative health outcomes of weight-centered approaches. Participants will learn useful strategies and resources for implementing non-diet concepts into health promotion programming through engaging and interactive activities.
> Following the presentation, participants will be able to:
> Describe the differences between health programs that follow a weight-focused (diet) paradigm verses a weight-neutral (non-diet) paradigm.
> Define common non-diet approach terms.
> Describe five advantages of incorporating non-diet approaches into health programming.
> Define weight bias and size discrimination and describe their negative effects on health.
> Identify strategies and resources for developing evidence-based health interventions grounded in non-diet concepts such as intuitive eating, body acceptance, and enjoyable physical activity.
