It has been an incredibly difficult decision to leave an organization that I care deeply about. I've grown so much through my work with ORCHWA and have been inspired a thousand times over by the CHWs and supporters that I have had the honor to work alongside of these past three years. > > Next month I?ll start as the Assistant Program Manager with the Healthy Families of Multnomah County Program. Through Healthy Families, I will have an opportunity to continue to work with home visitors and their supervisors, and many of ORCHWA?s partner organizations, so I will absolutely still continue to support Oregon?s growing CHW movement, albeit in a different capacity. > > I will be working hard with the ORCHWA Board to ensure a successful transition. ORCHWA is planning to hire a qualified candidate as soon as possible (please see below for job description - help us advertise!) This is a very good time for ORCHWA to manage such a transition. ORCHWA has the most incredible and engaged board of directors that I have ever had the pleasure of working with, and of course, a growing network of amazing members across the state. Last October, ORCHWA moved to a new fiscal sponsor home, the Oregon Public Health Institute and was just recently granted $325,000 from Kaiser Permanente Northwest to continue the Warriors of Wellness CHW project in the Portland Metro area into 2015. Although my leadership has been important to ORCHWA?s development, the organization?s accomplishments have been rooted in the leadership and engagement of many other people as well. Edna Nyamu has been doing a fabulous job as ORCHWA Coordinator and she is very committed to continuing in that role. She will continue to be a real anchor for the organization. > > I am incredibly proud and humbled by our work together at ORCHWA, and all of the terrific people who are a part of it. I have so appreciated the commitment, talent, and heart of the amazing CHWS that are every day, transforming Oregon?s health system, in ways seen and unseen. Thanks so much for your support and involvement. > > ORCHWA is seeking applicants to join the ORCHWA team for the Warriors of Wellness Program Manager position. A job description with more information can be found here. > Please note: > For those of you familiar with my work at ORCHWA, this position is slightly different and focuses much more time on the management of the Warriors of Wellness program. > Some experience as a CHW and/or CHW supervisor is preferred. Experience with project management, quality improvement and healthcare settings are highly desired. > We would like to hire the position as soon as possible to minimize a gap in management of this project. While the position is open until filled, the Hiring Committee will be doing their first review of qualified applicants as soon as January 20th, 2014. > Thank you for circulating this position to anyone you think would be interested and qualified. JANUARY WEBINAR: ADHD, the Brain, & the Classroom: The ABCs of Teaching the ADHD Learner Friday, January 23, 2015, 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. CST Presented by Christl Reinig-Everett, PhD, CTN Many missed days of work happen because of families who are working with special needs children. These children grow up and become employees! Not only do we have those with ADHD, but we are seeing an increase of veterans with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) reentering the work force. How can we adjust our training techniques to incorporate different learning styles? How do we incorporate movement in our daily work life to increase productivity? Right brain, left brain, frontal lobe, parietal lobe . . . what do these frequently used terms mean to the "ADHDer"? Why does the ADHD brain react differently than that of others? Attendees will explore the cognitive functions of the left and right hemispheres of the brain, gain knowledge of the responsibilities of each hemisphere, and learn what happens when they don't communicate with each other. Several resources are provided in this webinar to allow the attendee the opportunity to apply what they have learned. This session is presented using education best practices to give educators, parents, and loved ones examples of how to incorporate a variety of teaching techniques to reach all of the senses and learning styles. MCH Cultural Competency Training Message-ID: Be The Change You Want to See! Investing in ourselves to enhance how we see the world is a necessary step to improve the quality of life for ourselves and others. The national protests, which are in response to the numerous deaths of Black men by the police in 2014, have the US scrambling to create better race relations. As the human race, it is important that we find ways to create trust. When we can begin to see differences as safe, than human relations can become stronger. We want our babies to grow up in a peaceful world. This begins with conversations and interactions with others who have different cultures than our own; this is called cross cultural knowledge. Cross cultural knowledge, is one of the five cultural competencies; and it can only be acquired through interaction with people. Some easy steps to get started in cross cultural knowledge, is to visit a faith house that is different than yours, volunteer in the English as a second language classroom, attend community events outside your community, offer childbirth classes in different communities, join groups that represent diversity, this is the best way to learn other cultures. Don?t be shy, smile, laugh and enjoy learning more about the unique cultural of others. If you want to learn more about cultural competency than join me on Saturday March 7, 2015, in Portland, Oregon from 10:00am-5:00pm for a Cultural Competency Training: Working with Diverse Populations in Maternal and Child Health.
