The Health Education & Promotion Section of OPHA is a hosting a *Health at Every Size Workshop* Dates: March 31, 2016 Times: 830am - 400pm Location: Kaiser Town Hall, 3704 N Interstate Ave, Portland, OR 97227 Facilitator: Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD and Hilary Kinavey, MS, LPC *Description* Health at Every Size or HAES is an evidence based paradigm that expresses concern about the health effects of the war against obesity, and switches the focus from weight to health and well-being. The five basic principles of Heath at Every Size (HAES) are weight inclusivity, health enhancement, respectful care, eating for well-being, and life-enhancing movement. Using a combination of therapeutic approaches, including mindfulness, self-compassion, and intuitive eating, HAES can strengthen an individual's commitment to their health and wellness by focusing on quality of life and self-care instead of dieting for cosmetic reasons. In this workshop, Hilary Kinavey, MS, LPC and Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD, co-founders of Be Nourished , will review the philosophical approach of HAES, discuss research findings, and explore the practical application of HAES in a clinical setting. *Objectives* At the end of the session attendees will be able to: - Describe the principles of Health at Every Size - Understand the physical and emotional consequences of weight bias in our culture - Explain research findings that are central to HAES - Identify a few practical applications for their work setting This training is designed to help providers across a variety of practice settings to improve delivery of care for patients who live in larger bodies. *Agenda* 1. Introduction 2. What is Health at Every Size (HAES)? 3. Why shift to a HAES paradigm? 4. You as a Provider 5. Practical Applications of HAES 6. HAES Ethical Guidelines 7. Case Studies 8. My name is Sarah Martien. I am the Director for the Center for Diversity and Health Equity at Seattle Children's Hospital. One of our strategic goals this year is improving health literacy. We are beginning by focusing on asthma and medication safety. Our goal is to create a new series of simplified information sheets using pictures and fewer words on reading a medication label and how to remember when to take a given medication and how much to take. We also would like to create simplified materials for asthma instructions - how to use an inhaler and when to use it as well as what time of day. The audience for these materials would be LEP families and families with low health literacy. I'm hoping the listserv might be able to share a few examples of literature you use for families for asthma and medication safety that are simplified, using pictures and with limited words. Any and all examples are welcome. Greetings! The Health Education & Promotion Section of OPHA is a hosting a Health at Every Size WorkshopDates: March 31, 2016Times: 830am - 400pmLocation: Kaiser Town Hall, 3704 N Interstate Ave, Portland, OR 97227Facilitator: Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD and Hilary Kinavey, MS, LPC DescriptionHealth at Every Size or HAES is an evidence based paradigm that expresses concern about the health effects of the war against obesity, and switches the focus from weight to health and well-being. In this workshop, Hilary Kinavey, MS, LPC and Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD, co-founders of Be Nourished, will review the philosophical approach of HAES, discuss research findings, and explore the practical application of HAES in a clinical setting. Objectives At the end of the session attendees will be able to: Describe the principles of Health at Every SizeUnderstand the physical and emotional consequences of weight bias in our cultureExplain research findings that are central to HAES Identify a few practical applications for their work settingThis training is designed to help providers across a variety of practice settings to improve delivery of care for patients who live in larger bodies. Kirby, PhD, MS, FACE When: Monday, April 4th at 6:00 PM Where: OHSU Collaborative Life Sciences Building - Room # 3A003A 2730 SW Moody Ave, Portland, OR, 97201 (take the North Elevators to the 2nd floor) *FREE parking available at the Schnitzer Lot FREE EVENT - Everyone Welcome! ***If you are unable to join us in person, this event will be live-streamed via the Internet. Russell Kirby, PhD, MS, FACE: Dr. Kirby is the Chairman of the Department of Community and Family Health at the College of Public Health, University of South Florida. Dr. Kirby is a human geographer with extensive training and experience in public health practice, academic medicine, and academic public health. He will discuss population health informatics as it pertains to health equity, chronic disease and improving outcomes across a person's lifespan. The social determinants of health framework provides a holistic perspective for the study of how health promotion and disease prevention can improve population health. Integrating this framework with the life course perspective can provide powerful insights into the manners by which economic, social and cultural factors influence the health experiences of the individual, and collectively can enable us to identify interventions and policies that can ameliorate chronic health conditions. Population health informatics provides the tools to study the role of social and physical environmental factors, health behaviors, and genetics in creating the conditions that lead to chronic disease, and the role of health care and public health in improving outcomes across the population. While some elements are in place, much work needs to be done to create and maintain the necessary infrastructure for population health informatics to integrate the necessary data across space, time, and critical domains. ________________________________ Statewide Public Health Week Event Calendar OPHA is hosting a Statewide PHW Event Calendar on our website that will highlight Oregon Public Health Week Events: April 4-10.
