Hi Sarah,

Would it be possible to send this to the Health Ed section list-serve? We are hosting a viewing in Eugene of Dr. Kirby’s Portland event and would like all folks in the vicinity to be aware of this opportunity to hang out with us!

Thanks,

Selene

Please join your friends and colleagues to celebrate National Public Health Week at this free Live Webcast and networking event. Come to EUGENE to socialize and then watch the live webcast of Dr. Russell S. Kirby (see below).

Invite a public health friend and join the fun.

This event is the first of what we hope will become a regular gathering of Public Health professionals in the region to visit, network, and learn in an informal setting. And, most importantly, a time to enjoy the company of others with a passion for public health.

This Eugene event has been organized by local members of the Oregon Public Health Association (OPHA) with space and support provided by Lane County Public Health.

To help us plan, please RSVP: johnson.brian at comcast.net

Can’t attend, but want to join future gatherings? Send us a note and we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop.

Russell Kirby, PhD, MS, FACE:  Dr. Kirby is the Chairman of the Department of Community and Family Health at the College of Public Health, University of South Florida. Dr. Kirby is a human geographer with extensive training and experience in public health practice, academic medicine, and academic public health.  He will discuss population health informatics as it pertains to health equity, chronic disease and improving outcomes across a person's lifespan.

The social determinants of health framework provides a holistic perspective for the study of how health promotion and disease prevention can improve population health. Integrating this framework with the life course perspective can provide powerful insights into the manners by which economic, social and cultural factors influence the health experiences of the individual, and collectively can enable us to identify interventions and policies that can ameliorate chronic health conditions. Population health informatics provides the tools to study the role of social and physical environmental factors, health behaviors, and genetics in creating the conditions that lead to chronic disease, and the role of health care and public health in improving outcomes across the population.  While some elements are in place, much work needs to be done to create and
