In the United States, the leading causes of adolescent death and disability are related to preventable health risk behaviors, including unhealthy dietary behaviors, sedentary lifestyles, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, unsafe sex, injury and violence. </span></p>

<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">National Health Education Week (NHEW) 2012, October 15-19, aims to i</span><span style="font-size: 10pt;">mprove the health and future of America's youth through</span><span style="font-size: 10pt;"> this year's theme, "Adolescent Health: Planting Seeds for a Healthier Generation." </span></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-size: 10pt;"> </span></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">As part of NHEW 2012, the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) offers a planning guide and toolkit for health education specialists and other professionals who work with youth in schools, community organizations, youth groups and other environments </span><span style="font-size: 10pt;">to raise awareness of adolescent health issues and empower young people to make informed health decisions. </span><span style="font-size: 10pt;">The NHEW planning guide and toolkit is loaded with resources, fact sheets, sample release, sample proclamation and suggested activities for use with teens, parents, teachers, schools and others who interact with youth. <span>It also explains the valuable role of health education specialists in working with schools, communities, parent groups, and other groups to promote adolescent health.</span> </span></p>
