Investing
in ourselves to enhance how we see the world is a necessary step to
improve the quality of life for ourselves and others. The national
protests, which are in response to the numerous deaths of Black men by
the police in 2014, have the US scrambling to create better race
relations. As the human race, it is important that we find ways to
create trust. When we can begin to see differences as safe, than human
relations can become stronger. We want our babies to grow up in a
peaceful world.

This begins with conversations and
interactions with others who have different cultures than our own; this
is called cross cultural knowledge. Cross cultural knowledge, is one of
the five cultural competencies; and it can only be acquired through
interaction with people. Some easy steps to get started in cross
cultural knowledge, is to visit a faith house that is different than
yours, volunteer in the English as a second language classroom, attend
community events outside your community, offer childbirth classes in
different communities, join groups that represent diversity, this is the
best way to learn other cultures. Don’t be shy, smile, laugh and enjoy
learning more about the unique cultural of others.

If you want to learn more about cultural competency than join me on

Saturday
