Colleagues,
As many of you have heard, Portland Community College, a tobacco-free institution since September 2009, has implemented "Good Neighbor Zones" on the largest of its three campuses, Sylvania. These are areas on the perimeter of the college property that will allow smoking. Here is a link to a map of the campus with the zones: http://www.pcc.edu/about/policy/tobacco/good-neighbor-zones.html. Their creation is in response to complaints from neighbors about students smoking on private property.
For those of you working with community colleges in your communities, we have created reactive talking points for your use when responding to questions about PCC's revised policy. The location, size, geography and issue at PCC Sylvania is unique, but we want to demonstrate to local college leaders that 100 percent tobacco-free policies are best way to ensure the health of college students and employees, and that we can be a resource for connecting them with leadership of tobacco-free colleges of similar size, geography, demographics, etc. for information about their path to tobacco-free.
We are working to make that easier by developing letters of support from/case studies of Oregon's tobacco-free colleges. These will be ready in the next several weeks and will be a great way to follow up with your local leaders. Stay tuned.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you.
Jonathan
