Good afternoon Tribal TPEP Coordinators and Administrators. I am excited to announce and introduce the guest webinar presenter for the "Tribal mpoweRAISE" breakout session at the upcoming Grantee and Contractors Meeting, Vanessa Tibbitts (see bio below). Vanessa will present ideas and stories from tribal communities around Indian Country related to the R: Raise component of the MPOWER Framework. Some of the topics she will explore include: the cigarette tax refund agreement between Oregon tribes and the state; engaging tribal leaders in conversations about how cigarette tax dollars can benefit tribes; and maintaining, strengthening, and expanding relationships with commercial tobacco prevention champions in tribal communities.

Vanessa Tibbitts, BS, MAc

Vanessa Tibbitts is the Program Manager for the Northern Plains Tribal Tobacco Technical Assistance Center (NPTTTAC).  She is a student at Oglala Lakota College pursuing her MA in Leadership and Management.  Vanessa is a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.  She has received her BS in Human Services with an emphasis in Community and Institutional Change at Oglala Lakota College and has received her AAS in Paralegal at Western Dakota Technical Institute.

Vanessa has been working in the tobacco prevention field for over four years. She has received certification in the Basic Tobacco Intervention Skills for Native American Communities with the University of Arizona in 2012 and is a Certified Instructor.

Vanessa also serves as a Principle Investigator on two tobacco prevention projects.  She served as the PI for the American Cancer Society (ACS) American Indian Volunteer/Recruitment Focus Groups which held focus groups with Northern Plains Tribes to engage more American Indian volunteers for the ACS. Vanessa is also the PI for the Cansasa Coalition, which is a coalition of Traditional Healers and Elders with the tribal communities in South Dakota whose focus is to warn about the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and to discuss the importance of traditional tobacco use in American Indian ceremonies. Vanessa would like to serve American Indians using the skills she has acquired professionally, academically, and through her Elders for the future of her people.
