Tobacco industry's historical pattern of public deception


Erik Vidstrand, MPH,  Program Specialist at the Environmental Health Department of the Multnomah Public Health Department will talk about the tobacco industry's historical pattern of public deception. He will reveal the strategies the Big Tobacco is using and efforts they resorts to in order to mislead the public and divert people from the real issues around tobacco use. Erik  will talk about such activities as "We Card Awareness Month" and funding to domestic violence programs and will provide other examples of what tobacco industry does for corporate self-preservation. He will also talk about how not to be misled by seemingly innocent tobacco industry's campaigns and messages.

The desired outcomes

TPEP coordinators will learn:
* About multiple examples of the tobacco industry's deceptive practices.
* How to recognize discreet messages behind the tobacco industry's efforts.
* What can be done in their communities despite these practices.
