Hi everyone,
HPCDP is working with partners throughout the state to expand the availability of the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP), a lifestyle change program proven to prevent type 2 diabetes in adults at risk for developing diabetes. One of those partners, NorthWest Senior and Disability Services, is hosting a National DPP lifestyle coach training in Salem on Dec. 18-19 - for details, see below my signature in this email, and feel free to share this with others who might be interested.
A list of contacts in counties and tribes where the DPP is available is posted at www.healthoregon.org/takecontrol<http://www.healthoregon.org/takecontrol>. Scroll down to the National DPP section of the webpage for "Find a Diabetes Prevention Program in Oregon." There are also links to helpful tools and resources such as a prediabetes risk assessment. (Prediabetes is when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. Prediabetes means a person is at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes, as well as for heart disease and stroke. Most people who have prediabetes are not aware of it.)
I've spoken with several Healthy Communities coordinators recently about efforts to support the establishment or growth of these programs in their communities. Both Healthy Communities and TPEP program staff can also help by spreading the word about the National DPP in conversations with community and health system partners. Smoking causes type 2 diabetes, and people who smoke are 30-40% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than nonsmokers. For more information on the link between smoking and diabetes, visit http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/campaign/tips/diseases/diabetes.html.
Please let me know if there are any questions about the National DPP or how you can help make these programs more available and widely used to prevent diabetes.
Thanks!
Andrew
