Please prepare in advance for this group discussion of the Tribal In-person Training topic, “Using Advocacy to Move Tribal Tobacco Policies,” as it relates to your current and 2014-15 Tribal TPEP Program Plan. Thank you for reviewing the attached documents developed and presented by Michelle Singer during the training.

These questions will guide our discussion:

·       How willing is tribal leadership to engage in tobacco policy change? How have you, or how do you plan to, make advocates of tribal leaders, department heads, and tribal services decision-makers?

·       How are you strategically engaging key tribal community members in your policy change efforts?

·       What challenges does your program face in advancing tobacco policy change in your tribal community? How might good advocacy help you address the challenges?

·       What are the strengths of your tribal community? How do you use these strengths in your advocacy efforts?

And please be ready to explore together these advocacy tips described in Michelle’s “Fundamental Tools for Advocacy” (attached):

·       Being prepared

·       Know what you’re asking for

·       Using real-life human stories

·       Knowing your audience

·       Building alliances
