Dear Partners -

Public health's approach to obesity prevention is firmly rooted in policy, systems and environmental change. To that end, it is helpful to be familiar with what current policies are in place that promote (or limit) good nutrition and adequate physical activity, which are the key drivers for reducing the population level burden of obesity.

Building on the model of Oregon's Tobacco Laws and Policies<https://public.health.oregon.gov/PreventionWellness/TobaccoPrevention/Documents/tobfacts.pdf> publication (2014) the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention section is pleased to announce the availability of a new web-based inventory of relevant federal and state laws. This effort is called PAN Laws<http://oregonpanlaws.org/> for physical activity of nutrition laws. The web address is http://oregonpanlaws.org/.

PAN Laws<http://oregonpanlaws.org/> is intended to be reference material, to provide baseline information. Whether you are focused on worksites, schools, hospitals or other settings, PAN Laws<http://oregonpanlaws.org/> may help answer questions like:

* How much time and what kind of lactation spaces are Oregon employers required to provide for nursing mothers?

* Is there a law in Oregon requiring a certain number of days or minutes of physical education in schools?

* Under the federal menu labeling law, what kind of nutrition information are restaurants going to be required to provide to consumers?

Please forward/share this web site widely! The ultimate goal of this material is to help users assess current PAN policies and, based on what is in place, consider whether to propose revised or stronger policies, ensure enforcement of or accountability for existing policies, or implement other solutions to create environments that enable all Oregonians to be healthy and take care of themselves.

This reference material will be iterative and completely updated annually. Please do email me information on any additional federal or state laws or rules that you identify that fit. Thank you!
