Dear Partners -
Please see the announcement below about the release of the annual ConnectOregon grant fund through ODOT. All current Healthy Communities grantees have land use and/or transportation objectives in their work plans, and I know that many others of you are interested in this topic as well.
ConnectOregon is a major way that bicycle and pedestrian improvements get funded in Oregon, so public health people are interested in this as a chance to expand opportunities to get the population more active. This may be a good time to reach out to your local transportation planning colleagues (on staff in city, county and tribal agencies) to inquire about whether they plan to seek funding. Bringing your public health voice to the table, you may have an opportunity to talk with them about the need for access to places to walk, and areas of your communities that may be higher priority because they have greater chronic disease burden and/or fewer places to be active currently.
Of course, in addition to opportunities to be active, all transportation planning (active mode or not) offers the chance to plan well so that all people can conveniently get to jobs and services, including by transit. Access to opportunity is certainly a fundamental determinant of health!

The 2015 Oregon Legislature approved $45 million in lottery-backed bonds for the sixth round of ConnectOregon funding, aimed at improving transportation connectivity and supporting Oregon's economy through investments in non-highway projects around the state. Completed applications are due November 20, 2015.
ConnectOregon VI assists with project funding for private sector applicants, municipalities, cities, counties, governing organizations, and other transportation-related entities. Projects can cover investments in air, bicycle/pedestrian, marine/port, public transit or railroad transportation. Selection considerations for qualified projects include readiness for construction, economic benefit and value in linking transportation modes.
ConnectOregon is an important strategy for ensuring Oregon's transportation system is strong, diverse and efficient by making smart investments in multimodal projects.
