Dear Partners -
You may have heard by now that the U.S. Surgeon General's long-awaited A Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities will be released on September 9. Please mark your calendars to learn more:
September 9, 7:00 a.m. PST live webcast<http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/> (details/link forthcoming on the USSG home page): U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy will announce A Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities. The Call to Action will outline "how city planners, employers, and community leaders can ensure that the place where we live and work promote walking and physical activity while also leveling the playing field so that no one is left behind."
September 15, 10:00 a.m. PST webinar<https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/1721698138944259074>: America Walks! is hosting a webinar to hear from the lead scientific advisor on the project about what is in the Call to Action and will provide ideas about how to use the Call to Action in your own organization.
Please also consider the local partners that you might share this information with, such as:
* Facilitators of Walk With Ease and other self-management programs with a focus on walking;
* Local transportation and land use planners;
* Safe Routes to Schools program staff; and
* Others who are interested in increasing population levels of physical activity to combat obesity and chronic disease.
HPCDP will share more information and resources to support this launch. Content of the Call to Action is embargoed until the morning of September 9, so we will need to wait until after the release to ensure that any talking points, evidence, and resources that we share are relevant to the message going out nationally.
Walking is the #1 reported activity on the BRFSS each year, and evidence shows that initiatives related to making communities more walkable have some of the strongest effect on increasing physical activity levels. Please join us in advancing this work by using the Call to Action in your own community. Please get in touch with your liaison or me if you have any questions. Thank you!
