I am sharing information about training that is available from the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association. In particular, the May 25 webinar looks like an opportunity to get an Oregon-specific introduction to land use planning, geared to public health practitioners.

 OAPA Lunch Box Webinars

Winston Churchill once said, "We shape our buildings; therafter they shape us." Not only do planners shape the cities and communities we live in, but the built environment also shapes us physically, mentally, and socially. Most planners recognize the connection between the built environment and healthy communities.In 2012, CPR formed a Healthy Communities Work Group with the mission of identifying voids within the existing healthy communities framework and turning them into opportunities. The Work group’s first major outcome was the publication of a Healthy Communities Definition designed to introduce planners unfamiliar with this planning approach and for anyone in need to make a professional reference in conversations, presentations, publications, and actual healthy communities policy making.

Oregon's historic land use planning program is often considered to be one of the most comprehensive and effective at reducing sprawl and planning for livable communities in the nation. This webinar focuses on what public health officials need to know about Oregon's planning program (but it's good for planning commissioners to know too). The webinar will teach participants about Oregon's historic land use planning program, the relationship between state and local regulations, comprehensive plan basics, as well as how public health officials can influence the land use process to increase active transportation (that's the wonky terminology to say "increase biking and walking") and improve community health.
